Bubba Wallace’s peers are experiencing mixed fortunes across NASCAR’s tiers. While his Cup Series teammate, Tyler Reddick, qualified for the Championship 4 with an incredible drive at Homestead, his Truck Series mentee didn’t have the same fortunes at Martinsville. While the Craftsman Truck Series 2024 hasn’t been that bad for Rajah Caruth till now, it seemed as though Martinsville had some other plans for the Spire Motorsports driver.

Caruth was hit with a major setback, which ultimately resulted in him losing his grip on the race. This incident robbed Caruth of a shot at the championship 4 after putting together an impressive playoff run. Bubba Wallace’s mentee qualified in P11 for the race but slipped down to P28 by the end of stage 1, giving himself an uphill climb for the rest of the race.

Technical errors and a tale of sorrow for Rajah Caruth

Just when stage one was about to culminate, Caruth’s car was forced back to the garage. This ensured that when Caruth hit back the tracks, he had to start with 20 laps down. A race where you are tasked to come back from 20 laps down is quite a harrowing experience. As it was noted, the car had a major issue with its brake pad, which had almost broken off from the hub. 

Reacting to what happened on tracks, Rajah Caruth said, “We haven’t really had any failures or issues, so it was kind of a freak accident tonight. I don’t know to be honest, but kinda just did not have a shot there at the end, so frustrated just because, like, all those guys showed up and I thought we were getting better. I have been trying to get better at the short-tracks but it wasn’t in the cards tonight.” Caruth had lost his lead in the 96th lap and this was a moment of disappointment for all the fans who wanted to see him in the next round after putting together a mighty impressive season.

Caruth would have been optimistic about going into this race as he finished in P7 at Martinsville in April while starting 16th. This time around, the brake issue led to a P31 finish at Martinsville, which took him out of contention for the championship 4. This came as a major bummer for Caruth and the Spire Motorsports team as they were coming off four consecutive top-10 finishes into this final playoff race. Spire Motorsports had no choice but to call Caruth in and it was later revealed what their reasoning was. NASCAR Insider Matt Weaver reported the incident on X, saying, “Rajah Caruth is going to have to go to the garage to fix their brake failure “We can risk leaving you out there to kill someone or yourself.”

While the restart for Caruth did not prove to be eventful and contributed to a major 20-lap delay, things were not similar for the reigning champion Christian Eckes. When the final restart began with just five laps to go, Eckes knew he had to pass Taylor Gray, who had 60 laps with fresher tires, in order to clinch this race. Gray managed to take the lead going into Turn 1. In a desperate attempt to win the race, Eckes nudged the left rear of Gray’s No. 17 Toyota, forcing him off balance and out of contention. This led to an altercation between the two at pit road where tempers were flaring.

Eckes managed to make it to the finishing line 1.191 seconds ahead of Ben Rhodes and finally secured his position in the Top 4. Reacting to his win, Eckes mentioned, “Like I told everybody, I wasn’t going to lose this race — this truck was too good. The 17 (Gray) was hard racing. I feel bad about the 99 (Rhodes). I just got way too loose entering the corner”. This victory marked the 4th one for Eckes in the series and was his second at Martinsville. Despite his victory, Eckes will be aware of how angry Gray is and would be expecting some aggressive driving from him in Phoenix.
