In a recent YouTube video by The Daily Show, American actor, and author Kal Penn pulled back the curtain on NASCAR. Opening up a dialogue about the stigmas surrounding the stock car racing motorsport series, Penn asked various fans and drivers, including 23XI driver Bubba Wallace, about their take on NASCAR.

Explaining his views on the stigmas surrounding the sport, Bubba Wallace said that he really doesn’t agree with the popular opinion.

He said, “I think you know from the outside looking in, especially minorities feel that the stigma’s been there that they’re not welcome. And I’ve always been like, that’s not really true. I have been in NASCAR…my career has been 20 years…”

Being able to relate to Wallace’s opinion, Penn shared that he is always asked about how is it for him to be an Indian American actor. He told, “So, I always get the question what’s it like being an Indian American actor? I would imagine it also drives you insane to get the question, ‘Oh! What’s it like being a black driver?”

However, hilariously enough, despite pointing out how the question must drive Wallace insane, Kal Penn went ahead and asked the driver how it feels to be a black driver in NASCAR.

While explaining what it means to be a black NASCAR driver in this day and age, Wallace told Kal Penn, “Yeah, so, clickbait. And news outlets, they have to get their viewership up. And the way they do that is ‘black driver’.”

“I don’t walk around saying, ‘I’m the black driver. So, yeah, you embrace it. You go out and enjoy what you do.”
