One of the most anticipated paint schemes for this weekend’s Darlington Throwback Weekend is finally here. Bubba Wallace is set to honor former NASCAR driver Wendell Scott with his 23XI Racing paint scheme this Sunday.
NASCAR’s only African-American driver currently, Wallace will turn back time to the 60s and 70s, when Scott competed in NASCAR. He was one of the trailblazers in the sport during his time as well as the first African-American driver ever to win a NASCAR Cup Series race.

Back in the day, Scott drove a blue No. 34 car, with the car number in white; Wallace‘s No. 23 Toyota will resemble that look on Sunday. Root Insurance will be the primary sponsor for him at the Darlington Throwback weekend.
A tribute scheme that is special for Bubba Wallace
Wallace expressed his thoughts on honoring one of his heroes. “Chills. Ready to bring this scheme back to the track,” the 23XI Racing star tweeted.
This is not the first time that Bubba will run a paint scheme that honors Scott. Back in his Truck Series days, Wallace changed numbers from 54 to 34 to honor Scott’s induction into the NASCAR Hall of Fame.
He won the race back then and will hope that similar fortunes come his way in the NASCAR Cup Series race on Sunday. The 27-year-old will look to become only the second African-American driver to win a Cup race, and having Scott’s memory on his car while he does that would make his day better.
Having made his NASCAR debut in 1961, Scott the 1964 Cup Series race at Jacksonville Speedway Park. However, owing to a mistake in scoring, he was not declared as the official winner of the race. He was then awarded the win two hours later, but could not celebrate it on the race track.
Scott passed away in December 1990.
