Bubba Wallace on His 2018 Breakdown: “I Love to Win. I Hate to Finish Second, and Obviously That Shows for Everybody, But I’m Human.”

Who can forget Bubba Wallace and his public breakdown after his iconic finish at the 2018 Daytona 500? After finishing second in the race, the driver got out of his car and hung his head to let it all sink for a moment. Furthermore, his mother interrupted the Daytona 500 champion’s runner-up press conference, congratulating him. And this stirred up several emotions in Wallace’s heart.

In the 2018 Daytona 500 race, Bubba Wallace came second to Austin Dillon. That’s not just it. 2018 was his rookie year and his finish at Daytona was the highest finish by any freshman full-timer. Apart from this, it was clearly one of the best finishes by any African-American driver in the history of NASCAR.

While talking about his breakdown after the race, Bubba Wallace revealed in an interview; “I’m competitive. I love to win. I hate to finish second, and obviously, that shows for everybody, but I’m human. No matter if I race cars for a living and enjoy doing it, at the end of the day, we all get emotional about something.”

Furthermore, while reminiscing about the presence of his sister and mother on the racetrack, Wallace shared how heart-touching the event was for him. He explained; “No matter what the circumstances are, if you have family here and you run good, it’s been a while since you’ve been somewhat competitive, it pulls on the heartstrings.”

As soon as Bubba Wallace sat down for his post-race interview, his mother unexpectedly joined him on the stage. The NASCAR driver got up and gave her a long hug. And amidst this beautiful emotional rendezvous, Wallace’s mother uttered some heartwarming words. She said; “I’m so proud of you, baby.”

Following this, Wallace’s older sister shed her inhibitions and gave a tight hug to her baby brother. Touched by the actions of his family, Wallace said during the interview; “I just try so hard to be successful at everything I do,” Wallace said. “And my family pushes me each and every day, and they might not even know it. But I just want to make them proud. “

Wallace was definitely very much moved by the heartfelt gestures of his family members. Such memories are something that would egg him on to clinch the Cup Series next year.
