Sure, having multiple cars in the final four in NASCAR is a great look for any organization. But that kinda look also brings a lot of responsibility, one under which Dale Earnhardt Jr’s JR Motorsports perhaps crumbled versus Joe Gibbs Racing, headed by Ty Gibbs in Phoenix.

For the NASCAR Xfinity Series title of 2022, the final four comprised three JRM drivers, Noah Gragson, Justin Allgaier, and Josh Berry, which according to Dale Jr’s former spotter TJ Majors, came back to bite them.

Majors made a simple point that if Junior’s team had three cars fighting for the title, their resources and focus were divided amongst all three of them. But for Joe Gibbs Racing, this focus was singular.

“I was looking at like JRM had to build three championship cars..and #54 takes one. So all their focus is on one and I think that when we won in 2018, we won in Martinsville and the next couple of races,” Majors said in a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast.

In fact, Bubba Wallace’s spotter, Freddie Kraft, also described a similar situation in the Cup Series for Joey Logano, who eventually went on to win his second Cup title.

“You go back and look at it, they had the most time to work on Phoenix. They won the first race in the Round of 8 and that just gave them three weeks to focus on Phoenix,” the spotter said.

“When I retired from driving, I didn’t want to stop going to the track. I wanted a purpose. When I’m there, I need a purpose—so the broadcast came to me at a perfect time,” he said.

“Talk about nerves and anxiety going on a live television show. Even though I was at a racetrack and talking about things I knew really well, that was a great uncomfortable place to push myself into,” he explained.
