NASCAR is a high-speed motorsport that attracts fans with its thrilling and adrenaline-pumping races. However, the sport is not without its risks, as the drivers face the possibility of severe injuries or even death in the event of a crash. NASCAR has made significant strides in improving driver safety over the years, but as we saw during the Talladega wreck involving Kyle Larson and Ryan Preece, there is still work to be done.

As a NASCAR Spotter and a partner at Couch Racer, Bubba Wallace insider, Freddie Kraft is no stranger to the dangers of NASCAR. In a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Kraft discussed the need for increased emphasis on driver safety in the sport.

In the latest episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, Kraft spoke about the need for better safety measures to protect drivers from the violent images and energy absorbed during a crash. He said, “I think all the safety stuff in Ryan’s car watching that video, it worked, but at the same time he’s still absorbing way too much of the wreck.”

“You know like the violent images. The images are so violent that we have to figure out a way that the driver isn’t absorbing all that energy.”

Kraft went on to explain that the safety measures in place, such as safer barriers and car frames that crush to absorb energy, worked as intended in the Larson-Preece wreck. However, he also noted that the violence of the crash was still too much for the drivers to handle. He stressed the need for better safety technology to reduce the energy absorbed by drivers during a crash.

This incident highlights the ongoing need for safety improvements in NASCAR. This means NASCAR officials and teams must continue to invest in safety technology and research to protect their drivers.

The impact was so severe that a door bar from Larson’s Chevrolet Camaro detached and intruded into the cabin. The collision caused the passenger side window of Larson’s car to be ejected immediately due to the pressure of the impact.

The safety measures in place, including the car’s roll cage, seat belt, and window netting, prevented the situation from becoming any worse. While both drivers were able to walk away from the crash without any major injuries, the potential for a much more severe outcome was present.
