Electric cars seem to be the future of car engineering, especially to preserve the environment from the carbon emissions of naturally aspirated engines. And the motorsport industry has been a catalyst in proving that electric cars can be fast too, with Formula E and Extreme E. But could NASCAR be joining the electric revolution? Because Bubba Wallace‘s spotter revealed something fascinating.
But what came was a divide among fans regarding the change.

Although electric cars are arguably better when talking about their impact on the environment, the racing world isn’t exactly too fond of them. The fairly silent engines have lower speeds compared to their naturally aspirated, fuel-run counterparts. But electric engines have better acceleration, and Formula 1 has combined the best of both worlds with their hybrid engines.
And recently, Joe Gibbs Racing shared a video of a fully electric Toyota Camry, ready to hit the tracks. So, could it be the future of Stock Car racing? Or, at least, a possibility of another racing series? Well, Freddie Kraft asked the fans this very question on Twitter.
Does an electric NASCAR racing series excite you?
— Couch Racer (@CouchRacerShop) December 19, 2022
Couch Racer is an online store partly run by Kraft. And this question brought a lot of attention to the subject. Surprisingly though, unlike other racing series, some NASCAR fans seemed to be thrilled by the idea!
I’d absolutely be interested in it. The amount of power and torque EVs can produce is incredible, and for NASCAR to remain brand relevant I think EVs are a must in the near future.

I’d give it a shot, it’s still racing, isn’t that the name of the game? If you only go for the noise, stay home, listen to engine noise and save some money.

How the car is powered doesn’t matter to me. If it can produce speed and exciting racing I’d give it a try.

Excite, no but I am intrigued. The formula e series is interesting at times. Would be kind of cool to see battery savings real time in the draft vs leading pack, long run vs short run speed

I love motorsport as a testing ground for new technology. OEMs using the sport to develop real-world applications resulting from competition — not to mention their activation dollars.
Isn't that what NASCAR was built on?
— Matt Weaver (@MattWeaverRA) December 20, 2022
However, plenty of fans opposed the idea.
Not at all.
I understand the OEMs are pushing this narrative, but the lure of the sport is the sites, sounds, smells…
Is the sport for the fans or for the big $$$ behind the sport?… Because the fans have vocally stated how against this they are in droves.

Not no but HELL NO

Zero interest. I was excited to watch formula E when it was first announced, but then the first race I watched I learned they had to swap entire cars mid race.
The tech is not there to produce good racing abs be sustainable and affordable— Jonathan Absher (@jabsher91) December 20, 2022
Only if it takes the place of the arca series and makes that the electric racing series. Don’t F with the xfinity series.
Like I told my blind brother @Blind_Shawn for him it would be like trying to listen to a movie with the sound off.— Chris Berg (@UndraftedBerg) December 19, 2022
No electric racing series excites me. Unless it’s slot cars. Those are cool.

Well, any change is bound to come with a divide among the fans, that’s for sure. Even Formula E faced a good deal of backlash initially; still does, to an extent. But what do you think, would you like to see an electric Stock Car race? Let us know in the comments.

Because Bubba Wallace himself isn’t too fond of the idea.
Bubba Wallace doesn’t want NASCAR to go electric
The electric change has got not only the fans divided but also the drivers. And the driver who has been vocal about it is the same one whose spotter teased the change! Wallace declared he isn’t fond of electric racing.
In an earlier interview with The Athletic, Bubba revealed his stance on electric racing.
Wallace said, “The thing I’m concerned about is if we go like hybrid or fully electric. We’re sitting here now and you’re gonna hear race cars in this (podcast version of the interview), right? That’s cool. We’re at a racetrack.”

He even mentioned Formula E in the conversation as he added, “Nothing against Formula E drivers and Formula E teams, but I’ve watched plenty on TV and I’ve hit the mute button three times before thinking, ‘Oh yeah. You don’t hear anything.’ It takes away that excitement.”
He sure is vocal about the fact that it takes away from the excitement of racing. He declared, “So I don’t know if (NASCAR would) ever go fully electric. Who knows? But I would not be a fan of that.”
