One of the scariest wrecks in recent memory occurred towards the end of the Cup race at Talladega when Ryan Preece almost T-boned Kyle Larson leaving the #5 car’s roll cage with considerable damage. This saw a lot of thoughts and opinions from the experts and insiders coming NASCAR’s way, including from Kyle Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr.

In fact, the duo more or less had a similar point to make about the wreck between Larson and Preece which could’ve been far, far more scary than what it was.

Speaking ahead of the race in Dover, Busch was asked about his concern over the way Larson’s racecar looked after his wreck with Preece considering his door bars had caved in.

“Yeah, I am no scientist, but you see the concern with the severity of the damage on the right side of the #5,” he responded. “You can only wonder, what if it was the left side? Right? So that is a huge issue, but the bigger matter is what created the damage, you know?

“That is the other car didn’t sustain much damage. So, looking at the #41 and seeing some of the stuff on that car, it was a brick getting rammed into a stick of butter. It’s just going to smash it if it’s built too stiff.”

Interestingly enough, Dale Jr also observed a similar thing about the Next Gen car and the role it played in the whole thing.

In a recent episode of his podcast show, Junior claimed that NASCAR wanted to “make a car that could handle impacts and so forth. But these pieces would relatively survive so that the owners wouldn’t be afforded the cost of replacing all these pieces week after week after week,” he claimed.

“So maybe in that attempt to try to make a car that’s more cost-effective and more durable, these pieces have been made too, too tough.”
