Standing out among 2000 fellow participants is a feat few can replicate. The 41st running of the Tulsa Shootout recorded the highest number of entries – 1,855. The number confirmed was 1,798 and only 6 Golden Driller trophies are recorded. Achieving one of those would require exemplary speed – a ton of which was displayed by Kyle Busch’s son, Brexton Busch.

However, the 9-year-old speedster has a concerned mother back home. As a doting parent, Samantha Busch is always worried about the uglier sides of racing. This is understandable considering Kyle Busch flipped his car participating in the event last time around. Yet her husband is doing a great job in carving out a fine racer – as Brexton Busch added another laurel to his expanding resume.

Well, every loving mother would have an extra edge of worry for their child. Yet the way that the child tackles the worry is most important. Brexton Busch is doing a great job of proving to Samantha that he can handle high-speed racing. In 2024 alone, Kyle Busch’s little one clinched 126 top 10s, 107 top 5s, and 48 wins. He is the KKM Challenge Jr. Sprint Champion, Millbridge Restricted Points Champion, PA Speedweek Jr Sprint Champion, and INEX Winter Nats Bandit Champ. This dazzling resume just achieved a greater sparkle, although Brexton had to resist his mother for it.

Brexton Busch grabbed the Junior Sprint Golden Driller in Tulsa, leading the race for all 20 laps from the pole to the checkered flag. As an award for his resounding win, Brexton Busch was given a brand-new bike to tinker with. In response, he candidly shared how his mother would be against this. “Oh my mom’s so mad right now about that Burromax right now…she hates me on stuff that goes really fast. She is not going to like this.” However, the little racer then strongly admitted: “But I love it.”

Post-victory, his thrill was apparent as he told the press: “Yeah, that was awesome. I’m so glad to be here right now and win.” Brexton described his experience: “I was definitely very lucky to not get into some lap traffic, I was going to… I was a little worried about that. But still, just awesome to win. I thought that one time, on lap 14… whenever Eli had to pull in and Jax was right behind me, I thought I gave it away when I hit the brim one up. So I’m glad that I did it.” Even his rival, Owen Larson, Kyle Larson’s son, hailed him for his racing talent. Samantha and Kyle Busch have watched Brexton grow and mold his high-octane interests. However, in Tulsa, Samantha was buoyant – while her husband was nervous.

Going through an infertility struggle can shape you. For Samantha Busch, it strengthened her love for her children. From the moment that Brexton was born, the spotlight was on him for being Kyle Busch‘s worthy successor in racing. However, Samantha has expressed her displeasure several times. During the December 2023 Tulsa races, Brexton finished 5th in his first heat race. Racing dirt midgets or dirt sprints would have been the natural way forward, but Samantha was against it. “I’ll probably get into micros,” Brexton Busch told Flo Racing in 2023. “Maybe midgets. My mom doesn’t want me to get into midgets though.”

However, Samantha Busch had also noted how Brexton was heartbroken after failing to clinch a Golden Driller that year. Her son worked on that sadness for an entire year, meticulously preparing. He admitted so after the win: “I’ve been watching all the races from last year to getting here.” So his mother was oozing with emotion and happiness after Brexton fulfilled his ambition. “I was crying, I’m so proud of him,” Samantha said to FloRacing after the race. “He’s worked at this all year; he was so upset last year. Literally every race he went to this year, he said, ‘I’m doing it for Tulsa, I’m doing it for the driller,’ and he did it.”

Kyle Busch did not hide his fears and confessed that this was worse than the nerves during the Daytona 500. “I think this is more stress and more butterflies for me here than it is for the Daytona 500. This is such a huge deal, and it means so much to a family, what we do, and what we pour our lives into.” As Brexton makes family proud, despite his mother’s fears, he will look forward to further his racing career, as the Golden Driller is just the start.

Evidently, Samantha is not as mad as Brexton Busch supposes. As the young speedster keeps adding trophies, we would not be surprised if he becomes the next generation’s racing hero.
