Expectations are high from Brad Keselowski’s RFK Racing. After all, the team took advantage of the offseason to lay the groundwork for a promising future. Apart from adding another driver to its Cup Series operations, there seems to be a synergy within the team, making them a force to be reckoned with. While the veteran racer and Chris Buescher have had a slow start to their campaign, the same cannot be said about the team’s latest inclusion, who has been behind the wheel of the No. 60 Ford.
Ryan Preece has made quite a start to his debut campaign for Keselowski’s side. The seasoned racer secured an impressive finish at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, a result that does not surprise his crew chief, Derrick Finley. Giving credit where it’s due, Finley made a bold claim about the racer despite using ‘embarrassing’ methods to prepare the Connecticut native.

Crew chief Finley praises Ryan Preece’s attention to detail
Things are finally working out for Ryan Preece. The driver has spent two tumultuous years at Stewart-Haas Racing, which ended with the team ceasing operations at the end of 2024. Desperately scrambling for a seat, Brad Keselowski’s RFK Racing took a chance on him after leasing a charter from Rick Ware Racing. Despite a few mixed results at the start of the campaign, the 34-year-old seems to have finally found his stride after finishing third at the Pennzoil 400 at Sin City.
Revealing that Ryan Preece’s immaculate preparation is the secret behind his success, crew chief Derrick Finley said, “He’s got every gadget you can imagine on his phone and this is where I’m embarrassed to say I’m the engineer of the group. Because Ryan walks in, he’s got SMT, he’s got videos, he’s got everything going on in his phone. And of course, I need a computer and eight monitors to do the same thing but yeah. So you see his commitment level and what he’s got going on.”
In a sport such as NASCAR where the finest margins can make all the difference, the devil is in the details when it comes to relying on data and technology to get a competitive advantage. Apart from being physically fit, Preece is leaving no stone unturned to be as prepared as he can going into every race. Five full seasons in the Cup Series has given the Connecticut native enough experience to know what it takes, which is why Finley boldly claimed, “There’s no question in my mind, he’s going to win a race you know, and I fully 100% intend to be there when he does.”

Is Ryan Preece the underdog NASCAR needs to shake up the Cup Series standings?
Have an interesting take?
As things stand, there seems to be a great camaraderie in the No. 60 team, especially amongst the core road crew and the crew chief. Considering that Ryan Preece has only been involved in five races so far, the 34-year-old is quite ‘hands-on’ when it comes to preparation, including things like pit practice. Acclimatizing to a new environment takes time, but the racer is no stranger to change, having competed for JTG Daugherty Racing before his stint at Stewart-Haas. With momentum on his side, could he go on to secure a triumph at Homestead-Miami Speedway? Time will tell.

With Ryan Preece finally having the equipment in the NASCAR Cup Series to challenge the sports’ heavyweights, could he finally go on to secure his first triumph at the highest level? If the result at Las Vegas Motor Speedway is anything to go by, it’s not beyond the realm of possibility. However, consistency is key for the seasoned racer to constantly challenge the heavyweights and potentially make it to the playoffs. With momentum on his side, the 34-year-old needs to capitalize on the opportunity at Homestead-Miami.
