Inclement weather has played a big role in deciding Cup Series results this season. Shortening, delaying, and suspending races has been a common theme for NASCAR this season as Mother Nature continuously intervenes in their plans. While most of the time such weather has been disadvantageous, sometimes such situations can play out in a certain driver’s favor. A driver who has benefited from the recent rains in Michigan is the Brad Keselowski-owned team’s Chris Buescher.

Buescher continued to surprise the NASCAR community with a second win on the trot on Monday. With Sunday’s race called off, the focus was on a lot of drivers, but very few expected Buescher to make it two in two at Richmond and Michigan. With his second win, he also gets his name into an exclusive club with the legendary Kevin Harvick and into the good books of owner Brad Keselowski.

Prior to the race at Richmond last week, the 30-year-old had only been a winner twice in his Cup Series career. But fast forward two weeks, and he has already managed to double his tally and recreate some great feats for his team. Similar to Chris Buescher, Stewart-Haas Racing stalwart Kevin Harvick also won consecutively at Richmond and Michigan last year.

“It surprises you a little bit, but it was always our intention to go win every single weekend we show up. It’s good that it’s at two drastically different racetracks as well,” said Buescher, speaking to eminent journalist Bob Pockrass.

Our sport is tough,” claims the Texas native as he puts the level of competition in the spotlight.

“It’s not like other team sports or team-vs-team sports where it’s a 50-50 on your day, right? We are in a battle with a lot of other teams. You don’t get to win very often because it is so difficult to be that consistent and make everything fall into place at the right time.

Apart from joining Harvick in a club of elites, Keselowski‘s latest racing sensation is also the first RFK Racing driver to win multiple races in a season since 2017, when Ricky Stenhouse Jr. delivered the goods for them. Before Monday, the team had almost never managed to grab the lead at Michigan, but after Buescher’s exploits, they have also surpassed their tally of laps led in the last 17 races at the venue. Buescher led 52 laps to win the race.

“Certainly there’s a lot that goes into it. It’s not a shock so much as it’s just amazing to see the energy again.” added the victor, expressing that their growth has been gradual this season and that their efforts have slowly started paying off.

If one compares RFK Racing from last season to the current one, there might be many things worth noting. Not just from a racing point of view, but also in terms of their initiatives as they look to collaborate with Rick Ware Racing next season. When Brad Keselowski bought a stake in the team, he wouldn’t have expected the task to be any easier either. Despite that, Buescher has managed to surpass all expectations, and now they are set to have two drivers in the playoffs after having none in 2022.

“I don’t know what more we could ask of him right now,” exclaims the 2012 Cup champion.

“He’s out there winning races, executing in all aspects, not tearing equipment up, not getting in trouble in the media or any of this other stuff. I mean, what more do you ask for out of the guy?” said Keselowski, showing his admiration for the cleaner brand of racing that the #17 driver has shown this season.

The two wins in a row also make Buescher the first RFK Racing driver to win back-to-back races in over a decade. Carl Edwards was the last driver from the team to achieve this feat. If anything, the team will definitely be ending their season on a high note, and more so after a smooth passage to the playoffs. How the playoffs fare for them is a thing of mystery for now, but with the strong performances their Mustangs have displayed recently, things are looking good.
