Brad Keselowski’s acquisition in 2022 restored RFK’s elite standing. However, for Chris Buescher, adapting to team changes was a challenge, which was already compounded by the introduction of Next-Gen cars in 2022.

While displaying promising runs last season, the team faced challenges in reaching the checkered flag. The breakthrough victory in Bristol highlighted their potential, but the question remains: what factors led to this resurrection?

In the press conference post-FireKeepers Casino 400, Chris Buescher pinpointed the delay to the introduction of Next Gen cars and organizational changes, shedding light on the core reasons behind the team’s extended wait for victory.

Buescher started, “We got hit with next-gen cars and I think that was next-gen and Brad and becoming RFK lots of changes and so having that chemistry and not having to go far or to start from scratch certainly helped to get us the place where we were much closer much earlier in the season.”

“Um you know so that felt like working together was more and elevated than maybe when we were at which the car itself. so that you know it only took call 10 or 12 races in the season last year to figure out the car so that we weren’t having to learn each other we weren’t having to learn the organization you know there was so much new,” the #17 driver concluded.

While cheers echo for Chris Buescher, the unsung connection with crew chief Scott Graves adds a layer of depth often overlooked by fans.

Scott Graves and Chris Buescher forged their partnership in the Xfinity series back in 2014. Their collaboration bore fruit with three wins in the span of two years and culminated with the 2015 championship victory. Buescher’s advancement to the Cup series led to a separation, while Graves stayed in Xfinity.

However, their paths converged again when Graves became crew chief for Buescher’s teammate, Ryan Newman. In a pivotal move, ahead of the Charlotte Roval weekend, Roush Fenway Racing swapped the crew chiefs of Buescher and Newman, resulting in an impressive third-place finish for the reunited duo.

“We worked together on the Xfinity (Series) side and had that relationship and success there.” Graves said as per Kelly Crandall of RACER. After they united, the duo started to take back on the winning path and now Graves and Buescher won three Cup races within 10 months.

Being the quiet and under-the-radar leader, after long-awaited victory at Richmond, Graves said, “It’s been up and down and a lot of years of frustration. I always wanted to be part of a team that executed at this level. So that means a lot to me personally.”
