Getting a NASCAR license isn’t just about talent—it’s a rite of passage that comes with a big wait. Drivers itching to hit the track have to be at least 18 to even apply for one, and that’s just the beginning. The process is far from easy with aspiring drivers needing to prove their skills, earn their stripes in smaller circuits, and gain approval from NASCAR officials. It’s the ultimate test of patience for young drivers dreaming of the big leagues and although it seems like an airtight operation, some have managed to find loopholes.
But what if we told you there’s a story out there about someone sidestepping the usual wait? Before you raise an eyebrow, it’s not what you think—or maybe it is. NASCAR champion Brad Keselowski recently shared a jaw-dropping family tale about his brother and a license at just 14. How did that happen? Let’s just say it’s a story full of clever loopholes, sibling rivalry, and a little bit of creative paperwork.

Every family has its secrets, but Brad Keselowski recently revealed a story that sounds like something straight out of a sitcom. In a recent interview in his car, the 2012 NASCAR Cup Series champion shared how his parents “falsified” his older brother Brian’s NASCAR license when he was just 14, making him a bona fide “adult” in the eyes of the racing world.
“I’m the youngest of five, and my brother and I are, you know, very much opposites—uh, particularly physically,” Brad Keselowski explained, setting the scene for a tale that is as much about sibling dynamics as it is about ambition. “My brother looked like he was 18 when he was 14; I looked like I was 14 when I was 18.”
That physical disparity didn’t just create a unique family dynamic, it also opened a very specific door for Brian. Brad recounted, “My parents took full advantage of that, and, uh, they falsified my brother’s NASCAR license when he was 14, saying he was 18. He got to travel with them, and I didn’t. So, uh, you know, it is what it is, right?”
While young Brad was left at home, Brian was tagging along to the racetrack, soaking up the NASCAR atmosphere and honing his skills—albeit, not in the role he originally envisioned. “My brother’s been in racing much longer than I have because of that. He started working on my dad’s race cars—it certainly put him in a position where he became kind of a master race car mechanic at a very young age,” Brad noted on Stapleton42. But Brian wasn’t exactly thrilled about it. “He didn’t want to be; he wanted to be a race car driver. He didn’t want to work on the race cars. Just life didn’t go that way for him, you know?”
For Brad, the situation added fuel to the fire of sibling rivalry. “Did that just make the shoulder chip bigger? Oh, yeah, probably. Yeah, it didn’t help,” he admitted with a laugh. But even with a bit of lingering resentment, Brad seems to have made peace with the experience—and the quirky family decision that paved the way for Brian’s early racing involvement.

“If you saw a picture of him, like his ninth-grade, you know, freshman high school picture—yeah, he’s 18,” Brad joked. “And my parents were like, ‘Yep, he’s 18.’ They just filled out the NASCAR paperwork, and so he got to go with them, and I didn’t.”
For the Keselowski brothers, it seems those early days of forged paperwork and opposite paths ultimately led to a shared love for the sport—and a family legacy rooted deep in NASCAR history.
