Many athletes in almost every sport have always had weird superstitions and alterations to gear. Be it Michael Jordan wearing his college shorts inside his Chicago Bulls shorts or Tom Brady’s custom cleats. These abnormalities make them feel like they have a competitive edge. Stock Racing is no stranger to these antiques.
NASCAR drivers have been known for their quirks, superstitions, and unique innovations to gain an edge, or simply to stay comfortable during grueling races. From Dale Earnhardt’s insistence on always climbing into his car from the same side to drivers taping lucky coins on their cars, the sport is full of such tales of individuality. However, not every quirk is tied to superstition. Some, like Mark Martin’s infamous “b–l chiller hose,” were about actual functionality.

On a scorching 100-degree Fahrenheit afternoon, in peak summer at Daytona, with cars running at 200 MPH, let’s just say it can feel like getting locked inside an oven. Therefore, staying cool can be as challenging as racing itself. While some worry about dehydration, and some about heat strokes, there was one NASCAR legend who had whole other concerns while racing in heat. This driver was so unlucky, he came runner-up 5 times throughout his career but never won the championship. But there was one area where he never intended to get unlucky – his ‘family jewels’.
Mark Martin, the NASCAR Hall of Famer, was highly respected for his uptight hard-working discipline in the sport. But even someone of his stature had a quirky legend associated with him. It was the infamous legend of the “B–l chiller.” An anecdote that had been bounced here and there back in his racing days. A recent tweet by a fan reminded the community once again of the b–l chiller hose, which Mark Martin famously had on his No.6 Viagra car.

The user cheekily asked Martin: “I thought I heard somewhere you used a b-ll chiller hose from the NACA duct. Don’t see the small hose inlet on the car in the pic. A Viagra car post seemed the best time to ask 😂.” which also had the picture of the infamous hose attached.
This really put Mark Martin in a pickle, but as uptight as he is, he responded with his trademark honesty: “That’s the hose I ran from the A-post to my b–ls. It attached to the seat between my legs. I ran this every race until I retired.” which confirmed the infamous legend that had been there for years. To add on to this another layer, this time more ‘visual’ Brad Keselowski’s RFK Racing, the team that now operates the legendary No. 6 car, joined the conversation. They posted a video of Martin’s iconic Viagra-sponsored car with the “B–l chiller hose” intact inside. They captioned it: “Confirmed.” Which cleared it once and for all that the hose was an actual accessory in existence.

For Martin, who competed in NASCAR for nearly three decades, these small adjustments likely played a role in his longevity and performance. Though the “Viagra” sponsorship made the No. 6 car an easy target for jokes, Martin’s professionalism ensured it was always more about results than ridiculing. The car became one of the most recognizable in NASCAR history, and its quirky details only add to its legacy.
Martin’s accolades include being a 40-time Cup race winner, finishing 12 consecutive seasons amongst the top 10 in the driver’s standings. However, his sportsmanship off the field and ability to take a joke on himself are what makes him so likable. Stories about his b-ll chiller will live in NASCAR folklore, something unique, hilarious, yet useful.
