Lady Luck (fortune) has always had a peculiar fondness for Denny Hamlin in Las Vegas, though her affection manifests more consistently at the slot machines than on the asphalt. The 44-year-old Joe Gibbs Racing veteran, who famously hit a $50,000 Powerball prize in 2022 after correctly picking five of six numbers, has once again proven that his horseshoe remains firmly intact. While his #11 Toyota Camry couldn’t find Victory Lane at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway this past weekend, Hamlin’s fingers worked magic on the Buffalo slot machines across Sin City’s casinos. And let’s just say he didn’t need to rely on the race purse to have a happy trip back home. The veteran JGR driver amassed a staggering $277,000 in jackpots before ever donning his racing suit.
This tale of two venues—the deafening casino floors and the roaring racetrack—perfectly encapsulates Hamlin’s 2025 season thus far: moments of brilliance interspersed with heartbreaking near-misses. As one of NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers, Hamlin continues to chase that elusive Cup Series championship while demonstrating that his luck, at least off the track, remains unmatched.
What began as a single headline-grabbing $126,150 jackpot quickly escalated into a remarkable streak. Hamlin didn’t stop at one massive win; he returned to claim an additional $85,825 and later $65,300 the following night, bringing his casino earnings to $277,275. But hey, that’s not where the story ends, when pressed by former NASCAR driver Kenny Wallace about his total winnings, Hamlin simply replied, “330 Kenny,” inferring an additional ~$53,000 in gambling proceeds, making the total win to $330,000—all before Sunday’s green flag had even dropped.

The irony wasn’t lost on NASCAR fans that while Hamlin was hitting jackpots off the track, he’d just missed victory by the slimmest of margins at Phoenix Raceway the previous weekend. In an intense final-lap battle, Hamlin’s teammate Christopher Bell edged him out by a mere 0.049 seconds. “You know, it’s the first time we were able to get some clean air all day, and obviously, our car was really fast,” Hamlin reflected after the race. His frustration boiled over on the radio: “God Damit… F—,” a stark contrast to the exuberant celebration of his casino winnings just days later.
The Phoenix runner-up finish, however, did provide substantial redemption for Hamlin’s turbulent season start. After beginning 2025 with disappointing results—P24 at Daytona, P6 at Atlanta, and P21 at Circuit of the Americas—the second-place finish at Phoenix catapulted him from 17th to 7th in the Cup Series standings. While Hamlin hasn’t visited Victory Lane since his triumph at Dover Motor Speedway in 2024, his performance in Phoenix demonstrated that both his racing form and remarkable luck may be trending upward simultaneously.
What makes Hamlin’s gambling prowess even more remarkable is that this isn’t merely a one-off streak. In the past three years alone, he has twice won an invitation-only blackjack tournament in addition to his latest slot machine conquests, establishing himself as perhaps NASCAR’s most successful gambler.

The Complicated History of NASCAR and Gambling
While Hamlin’s bank account received a substantial boost, his fashion choices weren’t spared from scrutiny. Fellow NASCAR legend and current broadcaster Kevin Harvick couldn’t resist poking fun at Hamlin’s attire during his jackpot celebration. “I have no idea what he is playing, but he should go straight to the clothing store and buy a new sweater,” Harvick quipped on NASCAR on FOX. “Well, he definitely won the ugly sweater competition,” he added with characteristic humor.
Beneath the lighthearted ribbing and impressive winnings, however, lies the complex relationship between NASCAR and gambling that Hamlin carefully navigates. NASCAR’s Rule Book explicitly prohibits drivers from wagering on races, with penalties ranging from hefty fines to indefinite suspension or membership revocation. This policy stems from the sport’s foundational values – NASCAR founder Bill France Sr. was adamantly opposed to gambling, declaring in 1961 that “organized gambling would be bad for our sport” and that he would “fight it to the end.” The sport’s stance softened only after the 2018 Supreme Court ruling that legalized sports betting across many states.

Unlike Hamlin’s casino exploits, crossing the line into illegal gambling territory has proven catastrophic for others in the racing world. Former NASCAR driver , who grew up in the Las Vegas casino business, understands this delicate balance well. “I wasn’t allowed for the last 25, 30 years of my life,” Gaughan explained regarding betting on NASCAR races. “I grew up in this business. There’s a fine line there.” Even after retiring from racing, Gaughan maintains, “I still don’t feel like it’s right. I was too involved too long.”
As Hamlin continues balancing his racing career with his apparent golden touch at the slot machines, NASCAR fans can’t help but wonder whether his extraordinary luck will eventually translate to the track. The three-time Daytona 500 winner hasn’t claimed a Cup Series checkered flag in nearly a year, but as his $330,000 in casino winnings demonstrate, perhaps that rabbit’s foot in his pocket. And he is just awaiting the right moment to work its magic where it matters most – on race day.
