There’s no doubt that AJ Allmendinger is one of the finest road course drivers in NASCAR, maybe ever. One could even say that he is a road course specialist in a way, rarely skipping a beat or making a mistake.
However, during the first few laps of the Cup race at Watkins Glen recently, his race was almost compromised.
Allmendinger got spun around by Team Penske rookie Austin Cindric, something from which he and his team recovered for a second-place finish in the race.

But in the moment, the veteran driver was mad.
Like, really mad.
“Tell (Cindric’s) spotter I’m going to f***ing punt him.” Allmendinger said on his radio, which his spotter, Chris Rice, took to the next level as he replied, “If he doesn’t do it, I will.”

AJ Allmendinger on his second-second finish for a second day running
AJ Allmendinger had a very consistent week at Watkins Glen, which is to say that the veteran had the same result in the Xfinity Series race as well as the Cup Series race; 2nd.
Interestingly enough, Allmendinger finished in 2nd behind the same driver on both occasions, the defending Cup champion, Kyle Larson.
Speaking after Sunday’s race though, the Kaulig Racing driver tried to differentiate between the two near-identical results.

“Yesterday we kind of got gifted a second place but today we earned it,” he said. “We were pretty equal, it’s just different parts of the racetrack. And we had to fight hard, got spun early, use all the strategy.”
Allmendinger claimed it was “one of the most fun” races and racecars he’s ever driven in his life. And even though the result wasn’t what he wanted, it was still a positive day.

“It sucks finishing second, but it was a fun day,” he added.
