Joe Gibbs Racing didn’t have the best start to their season, especially Christopher Bell. In fact, at one point fans, all wanted him to be replaced by someone else. But he completely flipped his perception after ROVAL, winning the race in the very last minute.

But Bell really reached the end of the line, with him about to be fired.

In a recent interview after the Charlotte race, he revealed they could fire he very much.

“The first 10 races of the season, I knew that our performance and our capability was there, but like you said, we had a lot of things working against us,” Bell said. “And whenever we left, I wanna say Atlanta — I don’t remember what race Atlanta was in the season — but three or four races in, we were positioned last in the points standings.”

Atlanta was a very sad day for the driver, with him being penalized for driving below the double yellow lines. Of course, it was his fault but the fans had not taken it well.

He added: “I think a lot of people had written me off as a driver and written the 20 car off as, ‘Christopher is gonna get fired.’ I got that all the time, that I’m getting replaced. That the 20 car is a revolving door and I was gonna be outta here.”

The fans aren’t wrong, because the #20 car has had 3 different drivers in the last 6 years. And out of three, two of them were only with the team for 3 years.

Fortunately for Bell, though, he got a win this year, “Maybe I’ll get to stick around a little bit longer now.”

Christopher Bell won despite having a slow car

The #20 wasn’t a slow car per se, but it was much slower than the leading competition, like the #4 or the #9. Yet, he won the race, and thinks it’s a simple recipe.

Bell said, “The task was simple. We knew we had to win,”

He added, “Man, you’ve just got to be there at the end of these things. I keep watching all these races where the fastest car doesn’t always win. We were just there at the right time. We obviously weren’t in position to win, we rolled the dice, gambled, it paid off for us.”
