Kyle Petty is a pretty relevant name in NASCAR today. Since making his first Cup Series start at the young age of 19 at Talladega Superspeedway, this man has made numerous contributions to the world of stock car racing. So when a man of his stature goes out on a vacation during the offseason, it’s only normal that it will pique people’s interest.

However, Petty’s life has not been a smooth one. When he started out on his journey as a motorsport athlete, Kyle Petty knew nothing but NASCAR. Even during his darkest days, he resorted to racing to keep himself from succumbing to his unforgiving fate.

The tale unfolded 23 years ago when Kyle Petty’s son Adam Petty was all set to run in the Busch 200 NASCAR race at the Motor Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire. Things took a turn for the worse for young Adam as his throttle got stuck around turn 3. Subsequently, his car dashed straight into the wall at a speed of 130 mph, killing him instantly.

The most ugly part of that nightmare was perhaps the fact that Adam Petty was just 19. Kyle Petty was in a hotel in London with his 14-year-old daughter when the current chairperson of NASCAR Mike Helton called him up and said, “Adam’s been in a bad wreck. He’s been transported to the hospital.” Moments later, Petty received another call that had his world shatter before his eyes. Helton was at a loss for words as he fumbled weakly, “Man, I’m so sorry. He didn’t make it.”

That was not the only dreadful low for Kyle Petty throughout his 39-year racing career spanning over 800 races. Petty witnessed the death of his fellow drivers, including his close friend Dale Earnhardt in the Daytona 500 crash, just a year after his son passed away.

Back in 1965, Kyle Petty’s father, Richard Petty, took part in a drag racing event in Dallas, Texas. During the race, Richard Petty’s tire blew off, bounced into the crowd, killing an 8-year-old boy. Not just that, Petty was also a witness to his uncle Randy Owens’ father’s gruesome death.
