Will the 2024 Cup Series be a turnaround season for Daniel Suarez? Well, it is too early to ascertain anything concrete, but the Mexican driver did reinforce the fact that he is here to stay. The Trackhouse Racing driver had put his best foot forward by claiming a victory in the LA NASCAR Mexico race, and it was not long before he earned another victory in the 2024 season in an impeccable manner at Atlanta Motor Speedway. And like most people, NASCAR legend Richard Petty continues to rave about the race’s climax.
Very few drivers have been able to achieve what Richard Petty has achieved as a NASCAR driver. Whether it’s his 7x Cup Series championships or his 200 victories, the King more often than not has delivered finishes that are worth mentioning and have been permanently stored in the pages of NASCAR’s history. However, it seems that the legend himself was left searching for words after Sunday’s race.

The second race of the season bore witness to drivers spanning out and racing four-wide, on a track that boasts the features of superspeedways. If that wasn’t thrilling enough, the conclusion of the race saw three different drivers push their cars in a throttle to deliver a photo-finish and one of the closest finishes in NASCAR history. In this nail-biting race, it was Daniel Suarez who claimed the victory after outfoxing Ryan Blaney and Kyle Busch. Owing to this, the Hall of Famer Richard Petty delivered his verdict on the race. In his conversation with Dale Inman, the King stated, “But this was racing.”
“These guys were racing each other. One guy could pull out and pass somebody. Where at Daytona when somebody pulls out they gotta have somebody with them. Here they didn’t need any help.”
After listening to Petty, his co-host Inman expressed, “They shoulda had practice I think. I’m not criticizing nobody for doing what but it was such a guess on all the cars.” A surprised Petty concluded, “From the time they throwed the flag, till the race was over, them guys were racing like it was the last dadgum lap. Can you believe they run a race that long? 260 laps and three cars were in that much of each other.”

The victory was a much-needed and much-awaited one for the Mexican driver. His performance in the 2023 Cup Series was utterly dismal and failed to qualify for the playoffs. As a result, the driver found himself in the hot seat for the 2024 season as his contract with Trackhouse Racing nears its end.

This victory does bring a sense of relief to Suarez, who will focus on his performance for the remainder of the season. Moreover, it seems that his team owner Justin Marks has rekindled his belief in Suarez’s caliber. In his interview with the media post-race, Marks expressed, “I’m a huge, huge believer in (Suarez’s) talent and his ability, and he’s a big part of this Trackhouse family,” Marks said. “It’s our job as a company to put the tools and resources and support around him so he can go out and do the things that he did tonight.”
“This is why we made a change with some of the people around (Suarez) and the processes to put him in a position where he can win, because Trackhouse is a winning company. I would say that it’s validation for the work that we’ve done this offseason to be able to put him in a position where he can showcase his talent,” Marks concluded.
