The Xfinity 500 did not see a lot of drama. Martinsville witnessed the longest stretch of green flag laps since 1996 during the 500-lap long Cup race. However, Saturday’s Dead On Tools 250 wasn’t short of drama at all. And that was exactly what the fans were expecting from the penultimate race of the season. And the crux of the spectacle was a skirmish between two Richard Childress Racing teammates.
Sheldon Creed needed to win the 250-lap race to qualify for Championship 4, and, depending on where Cole Custer finished, perhaps even Austin Hill needed to do the same. However, despite running 1-2 towards the end, neither could bag the checkered flag. All things considered, it was possibly the most disappointing day for the Richard Childress Racing duo. But that is not where it ends.

On the final restart, Austin Hill nudged Sheldon Creed to the top of the track. Creed wouldn’t let it slide and responded by bumping Hill toward the lower groove. Following the skirmish, they battled door-to-door as JR Motorsports sensation Justin Allgaier snuck behind them.
Just around the final turn, Hill side-bumped Creed from the inside. As a result, Creed was pushed too far into the corner and had to stomp the brakes. Unable to maintain control over his machine, the #21 Chevy Star rammed straight into Creed’s bumper before spinning out. And it was all that Allgaier needed to grab his win and with that, the final spot in the Championship 4 race. While Sheldon Creed finished shortly behind Allgaier, Hill failed to make it to the start-finish line after his car’s radiator had busted from the crash. And that’s where the ugliness began.
While walking towards the infield care center, Hill clapped while he mocked the number 2 pit crew while crew chief Jeff Stankiewicz shrugged his shoulders, implying that they had no part in this. Later, walking out of the racetrack, even Richard Childress angrily mentioned to the reporters, “I?ve had drivers drive for me before but nobody as stupid as Sheldon Creed.”

The on-track squabble ensued as Austin Hill retorted, “I cannot wait for him to get out of RCR. Can?t wait to have Jesse Love as a teammate. Maybe he?ll work better with me.” Interestingly, even Creed pulled no punches as he shed light on one of the reasons why he is leaving Richard Childress Racing for Joe Gibbs Racing in the upcoming season. “[Richard Childress] was just mad at how I raced the #21, but the roles reverse, they don?t say anything,” Creed said, adding, “That?s probably part of the reason I?m leaving.”
NASCAR fans brutally bash Austin Hill, calling him a “crybaby”
According to NASCAR, Hill was well aware of Creed’s 65-point deficit below the cutline. Hill said, “I know Sheldon has to win to get in, but I mean, at least give me a chance! I didn?t feel like I was given a chance, and then when he got shoved up the race track or whatever happened.” However, after his sarcastic gestures toward the #2 crew, many in the NASCAR community turned against him.

Someone wrote, “What happened on the track has nothing to do with the 2 crew. Maybe he needs to sarcastically clap to his own crew/team for not letting him have a better idea of the points and maybe they wouldn?t have raced as hard? This guy has issues. Nothing is ever his fault apparently.”

“Watched the replay over and over. Honestly cannot find anything the #2 did wrong. Hill got his feelings hurt. Looked like hood hard racing to me,” said another. Someone wrote, “He?s the biggest clown in nascar.” Another one typed, “Austin is a crybaby and a Diva.”
Hinting at the nuance of contact in the arena of NASCAR, someone exclaimed, “10/10 I would have done what Creed did. This is racing. That’s what people want to see.” A user left a considerably mean comment that read, “Austin is a hypocrite. Glad he didn?t make the championship 4 he?s not mature enough to be a champion.”
