Richard Childress Racing is no longer the powerhouse organization it was once under the leadership of Dale Earnhardt. It has been three decades since they last celebrated a championship win. And the only sign left of that era is the No. 3 RCR car, which unfortunately hasn’t seen Victory Lane very often.
Perhaps the best thing that could’ve happened was to retire the #3 car in memory of the invaluable contribution by Dale Sr to NASCAR. However, the RCR hierarchy chose to use it as a family heirloom, and since then, Austin Dillon has taken over the command of the iconic #3 car.
While it is easy to single out Dillon’s sub-par performances, RCR themselves hasn’t helped the driver with a good race car. In five races, he has finished 30th or worse in the 11 starts. Moreover, the theme is the same with Kyle Busch’s No.8 ride, which is just far off from competing against the likes of HMS and JGR cars.

With just a single top-10 finish, zero laps led, and 31st in the drivers standings, he is looking at an average finish position of 25.4. The entire statistical chart highlighting Dillon’s inefficiencies was shared by a user named NFJJ on X. It wasn’t a big surprise to see the #3 car produce similar results as it’s done in recent history, but fans were riled up to see Dillon still in the driving seat.
Austin Dillon is having a SHOCKER of a season.
– 31st in points
– 25.4 Avg Finish
– 0 laps led
– ONE finish better than 16th
– 9 finishes of 22nd or worse (out of 11 races)On pace to have his worst average finish of his career by nearly four positions. pic.twitter.com/WPlXKLmxgH

Fans question Austin Dillon’s credibility in driving the iconic #3 RCR car
Calling out both the Dillon brothers, an angry fan replied by saying, “It’s time to bring the No. 3 back to stardom. Both of the Dillon boys are finding out that even the shiniest of silver spoons can’t buy success at the top level of NASCAR.”
Making an argument about how only Earnhardt deserves to drive the race car, a fan suggested that Jeffery Earnhardt would be an apt replacement for Dillon. “This is why only Earnhardt should be in the 3. Take Dillon out and put Jeffery Earnhardt in or just get rid of the 3 car entirely.”
With his grandfather Richard Childress at the helm of the company and his father Mike Dillon holding the post of general manager. It is hard to see Austin vacate the seat. This was the sentiment of another fan who added, “It’s not a shock!!!!! This is the owners’ grandson. If it were anyone else they would be out!!!!!”
This wasn’t only jibe directed towards the RCR driver and his fan, as another fan went on to add, “No one except the hardcore Dillon fans are shocked. When nepotism is more important than talent these are the results”.

In a bid to save the failing project, a user suggested promoting Xfinity driver Austin Hill to the second seat at RCR. Thus ditching Austin Dillon of his Cup ride, “Let Dillon go, Retire the 3 and bring up Austin Hill in the #29”.

Taking a jibe at RCR racing operations, a user appreciated Kyle Busch’s effort to keep the team afloat that is in shambles. “Austin Dillon is good enough to be in competition for 14th to 20th. To me, this just shows how bad RCR currently is. We should be applauding Kyle Busch driving this sh**box of a car they bring every week.”
It’s almost been a decade since Dillon has managed to run in the Cup Series, driving the #3 car. While most of us might not like the sight of him competing, as long as he is backed by his family, he will continue to race.
