Tony Stewart reserved high praise for Chase Briscoe after the NASCAR Xfinity Series star was announced as Clint Bowyer’s replacement. Briscoe will drive the No. 14 car at Stewart-Haas Racing, which Stewart drove before Bowyer. The youngster is in the midst of a purple patch in the Xfinity Series.

Stewart’s comments led Briscoe to say he was at a loss of words. Five years ago, he could not have imagined earning the chance to drive the iconic car. He called Stewart his hero.

Still at a loss for words over everything, I grew up with Tony as my hero. Five years ago I was sleeping on couches and volunteering at race shops and now I’m driving my hero’s car,” Briscoe expressed.

Tony Stewart sees himself in Chase Briscoe

Stewart likened Briscoe’s rise in NASCAR and now into the Cup Series, to the early days of his own career.

You know, to see Chase come up through the ranks and come up like we did, and now he’s making his march up through NASCAR to the Cup Series. It brings back memories of when I went through the same exact path to get there myself,” Stewart said in a video released on Twitter.

Stewart said that the last few races of the 2019 season were a pre-cursor to what Briscoe could do this season. Briscoe already has nine wins in the Xfinity Series this year. He also became the first driver to seal a place into the championship race with a win at Kansas last Saturday.

There’s days when it may not be perfect and he finds a way to do what he would do in a sprint car or something else, open-wheel car, and figure out how to manipulate it to get it to do what he needs to do to get the results,” Stewart added further.

Stewart then spoke about having a special affection for dirt-racers in the No. 14 car. “I, obviously, when it comes to the 14 car, have a passion for having dirt drivers in with it. With, you know, having had Bowyer in the car and with Chase in the car,” he added.
