As the highly anticipated Chicago Street race approaches, drivers are preparing to take on the challenging new track. Racing on a street circuit is always tough, and every driver knows they’ll need to bring their A-game. To gain an edge, many drivers have turned to Sim Racing, using virtual simulations to familiarize themselves with the track and gather valuable insights beforehand.

This season has been particularly successful for William Byron, but even he knows that the new track poses a formidable challenge. In a recent episode of the podcast “Actions Detrimental,” hosted by Denny Hamlin, he and the JGR driver delved into the topic of Sim Racing. However, the conversation took an intriguing turn when Byron shared a personal struggle from his past.

To add to the intrigue, Denny revealed a secret about the new hire at 23XI Racing, the team co-owned by Denny Hamlin and NBA legend Michael Jordan.

A Sim Racing Star’s Struggle on the Streets of Chicago

During a recent episode of Actions Detrimental, a captivating conversation unfolded between Hamlin and Byron, delving into the challenge Dale recently launched with Sundrop. As the discussion moved to Sim Racing, Denny curiously inquired about Byron’s preparation for his first-ever Street Race.

In response, Byron admitted, “Not at all, I haven’t done any, I actually got my iRacing guys to send me a video of Lap, but I mean I haven’t done much. We went to an iRacing race, and I was actually terrible and Ty Gibbs was actually good that week but we’ll see. I don’t know it’s been tough.”

Later, Denny probed further into Byron’s reliance on Sim Racing. The HMS star then revealed, “It depends on the race track. I think honestly I’m kinda labeled as a Sim guy but I don’t do a lot during the season because I’m racing so often and more so racing on late models that I do during off time so I think honestly doing that and just do in Chevy Sim.”

During the conversation, Byron bravely opened up about the ‘late models’ period of his career. He expressed, “That was a period in my career I spin a lot of time and so I felt like I was in and out quick and I felt like if I went back I could learn some stuff and about tire management and kind of figure out what I get better at with that. I think it’s expensive I wish it was more cost appropriate. It’s tough.”

On the same podcast, Hamlin said, “I think it’s super helpful we hired Keegan [Leahy] over 23XI as our driver coach and he was super helpful I think he helped Tyler Reddick quite a bit at COTA.
