As we reach the penultimate race of the season, the #9 team finds itself in a tricky position pertaining to their?championship hunt. To sum up, let’s say they faced different forms of misfortune every week. Sometimes, the car runs out of fuel and sometimes Chase Elliott runs out of luck. Despite failing to make it into the playoffs this current season, he was able to advance his car into the owner’s championship on points. Sadly, the fans don’t seem to care a lot about the owner’s championship.
When Chase Elliott missed the playoffs this year for the first time in his 7 year-long career with the winningest team in NASCAR, his fans wailed. His actual last shot at making it into the round of 16 came at Watkins Glen but poor luck decided to play a constant tango with the 27-year-old. This series of unfortunate events started when the Georgia native broke his leg due to a snowboarding accident earlier this year. Alas, nothing has changed since then.

Despite being at the top of the game and despite being the first team to have made it into the Championship 4, Hendrick Motorsports remains winless when it looks up the 2023 track record of the number 9 Chevy icon. The entire community could blame Chase Elliott for not being careful enough while ice-skating or could blame crew chief Alan Gustafson for that miscalculated strategy at Watkins Glen. But it is of little use.
Being a persistent driver, Elliott didn’t lose hope, though. His next goal was the owner’s championship trophy, a consolation prize, even though he failed to qualify for the driver’s championship.
The last race of the round of 8 will witness Chase Elliott sit behind the wheels of his Auto Parts Chevrolet Camaro ZL1 in a must-win situation as he stands 76 points below the provisional elimination cutline. As things stand, Elliott could find some solace in the fact that the Xfinity 500 would roll out on one of his favorite tracks, Martinsville. However, it?s not all sunshine and roses.
Kyle Petty showed no hopes for the 2020 Cup Series champion and said, “I think Chase Elliott’s best chance to win at Martinsville is next year. That’s kind of the way I look at it. I’m sorry. This year has been an abysmal year for Chase Elliott.”
Petty didn’t look too interested in the owner’s side of things. Yet, he didn’t pull any punches in blatantly stating the sorry situation of Chase Elliott. “I don’t wanna get into the owner’s playoffs and all that stuff but my gosh man, he’s falling like a rock in the owner’s playoffs,” he exclaimed. “Just put him in a playoff situation and he falls like a rock.”
Although not very important for Petty, the owner’s championship holds immense importance for the Golden Boy of Hendrick Motorsports.

In Chase Elliott’s mind, the owner’s championship is just like the driver’s championship. And while he strived to find his lost mojo back, Elliott explained why this was so important for him.
According to autoweek.com, Elliott said, “We?re still racing for something. So, you got to do that stuff in moderation and still try to perform well.”
While many may think that it’s the end of the world if one doesn’t make it into the playoffs, Chase Elliott feels otherwise. Expressing why getting the owner’s championship is a big deal for him, he said, “I?ve learned through this process that life goes on? and there are much bigger things than cars going around in circles every weekend.”
