Amy Earnhardt and Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s love story began in 2009 and blossomed into a fairytale romance. The two-time Daytona 500 champion and son of NASCAR icon Dale Earnhardt Sr. surprised Amy with an unexpected proposal, catching her off guard. Despite their deep connection, marriage wasn’t initially on Amy’s mind, and just like on the race track, Dale was in the lead.
Today, the Earnhardt family is the epitome of the perfect American couple, with their beautiful home and two daughters, Isla Rose and Nicole Lorraine. Their journey, however, started with a proposal that left Amy unsure but ultimately led to a life of love and happiness together. She recounted the details of that day in a conversation with Kenny Wallace.

A picture-perfect proposal that shocked Amy
Amy’s first encounter with Dale Earnhardt Jr. was concerning professional commitments. Dale Jr. had hired Amy, who was a Texas-based interior designer, to redesign his home in Kannapolis. However, soon this professional relationship turned into love, although the couple was not vocal about it. It was only in 2011 that they made a public appearance together, which further solidified their stance in front of the media.
While the two were dating, it wasn’t on their cards to get married anytime soon. But Dale Earnhardt Jr. had some unique plans. It was July 2015 when he popped the question and that too in the most unconventional style. It was during a trip to Germany that Earnhardt Jr. brought forth the ring and Amy was in utter shock. Speaking of how taken aback she was, Amy said on the Kenny Conversation, “The next morning we get to the church, and we are walking around. It’s super quiet, it’s tiny, it’s adorable… And so I’m walking around and when I turn around, I’m kinda close to the altar and he is on his knee. And I literally just look at him like (in awe) are you sure?”

A trip that was supposed to be an ode to their German ancestry quickly turned into a life-changing experience. After an emotional proposal that left his sister, Kelly, in tears, Amy still wanted to make sure it was all real. She added, “Kelly is crying already and then he gives me the ring and then we have a few moments afterwards and Kelley and LW, and Martin walk out. And I’m like are you sure sure? Cause, I mean are we sure? Up until that moment we have had so many conversations about not getting married that I never thought it would happen… totally blew me away.”
The two got married in 2016, and since then it has been a dream. The couple’s journey from that unforgettable proposal to building a family together stands as a testament to the unpredictable yet beautiful twists that love can take when you least expect it. Dale Earnhardt Jr. has credited Amy for being the rock beside him and helped him greatly while he struggled with multiple concussions, which eventually led him to retire from full-time racing. “Without Amy, I would’ve suffered emotionally, really severely… I would have probably given up,” said Dale Jr. in an interview with Graham Bensinger in 2023.
