The off-season is a time for drivers to kick back and relax. Even though Dale Earnhardt Jr. is not driving full-time, he’s got one-off appearances and the full-time responsibility of managing his team JR Motorsports, the CARS Tour, his wildly popular podcasts, and much more. So with the season at a pause, even he gets some off time with his wife Amy Earnhardt, and his two daughters.

Right in the middle of the off-season comes the festive period. Thanksgiving is a no-brainer for Jr. who likes to have simple “Sweet cornbread,” the Southern classic that reminds him of his roots. The problem comes when it’s Christmas and Dale Jr. has to buy a present for Amy, and the question of “what?” arises. While Jr. thinks he knows his wife inside out, Amy strongly disagrees!

What is Dale Earnhardt Jr.’s gift-giving story?

Continuing Dale Sr.’s legacy, Jr. was a menace in the red-white Budweiser car. Throughout his career, he managed to bag 26 Cup Series wins, 24 wins, and two championships in Xfinity. It’s hard to imagine that the 2-time Daytona 500 winner is bad at something. But there is one thing and Amy recently spilled the beans on it on the podcast episode of Dale Jr. download.

In the episode, Dale Earnhardt Jr. invites trouble for himself, asking, “What does Amy want for Christmas?” And Amy was clear on what she wanted, instantly replying, “I want jewelry. ” Well, that sounds fairly straightforward, but apparently it’s Dale Jr.’s “Arch nemesis.” Not jewelry, but buying any gift for his wife. The problem is Jr. is too confident about what Amy needs and wants.

The veteran sharing his gift selection process, said, “So in the past, I myself will go and I will scour the web and I will find something that I like and I will get that for her and she will like it.” But Amy was quick to correct him. “That was the problem. He will come home and tell me, I was out shopping. I saw this thing made me think of you. I’m like, did you buy it? Nope.” Well, we can’t really blame Amy, like, who gifts their wife a “charcuterie board?”

For those of you who don’t know what a charcuterie board is, it’s basically a chopping board for cutting vegetables or dicing meat. Amy pointed out that Jr. buying this shows his lack of attention in the house. “That comes back to paying attention. Like I would never order that. Have you not seen what’s in the kitchen? Have you ever seen one of those floating around in here? Do I serve that (expletive) to you? No.” Dale Jr.’s defense? “Everybody on Amazon said it was great.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can Dale Jr. ever top the El Camino gift, or is he stuck with charcuterie boards?

While a chopping board has great utility, it lacks thought. But let’s cut Jr. some slack! Last year, he got his wife a Buddy Baker throwback shirt, something Amy was longing for. It was something she picked off a thrift store years ago and loved wearing it, but it got lost and after a long time searching for it, a fan handed out the shirt to Jr. and he gave it to Amy! Or the year before that when Jr. gifted Amy a 1966 El Camino! “By far the best gift I’ve ever received,” were Amy’s exact words.

Well, naturally Amy’s disappointment with a charcuterie board is understandable after the standards were set so high before! But one thing that remains unchanged is the Dale Jr. family’s Christmas traditions.

Dale Jr. shares how he celebrates Christmas

Jr. might be lazy in his gift-finding endeavors, but that is not the case when it comes to decking up the living room with Christmas decorations and lights. Apparently, it’s something the North Carolina native does every year! “There’s like a vision of like I hope this there’s a couple things that I hope happen… We start to prep the living room for Christmas for when they come down.”

The moment that Dale Jr. cherishes the most is when his daughters, Isla (6) and Nicole (4), come down the stairs to his decorated living room, glance at it, see the gifts by the Christmas tree, and burst with excitement.

After the decorations are done, the couple takes a breather, “And I am hopeful that like when that’s done we have like me and Amy have like a 20 or 30-minute sit on the couch… We kind of just kind of sit there before we go to bed, and just have a moment to ourselves.” Even Amy added to this saying, “Like a little hangout with the fire going. I usually like to have some champagne and give him a cocktail or something we have to eat some Santa cookies and like to do all those things also.”

Amy talks about some traditions that the Earnhardt household still follows, “I started doing gingerbread houses with Karsyn, Kennedy and then Wyatt when he came when they were very little.” These are the children of Dale Jr.’s older sister Kelley Earnhardt. “We still do that every year,” Amy added, emphasizing the love in the Earnhardt household among siblings.
