Super Bowl LIX has commenced with the Philadelphia Eagles, routing the Kansas City Chiefs 4o-22. Patrick Mahomes had a disappointing night as the quarterback of the Chiefs. However, if the Kansas City outfit is looking for a backup, NASCAR drivers feel one guy is perfect for the job. It all started earlier today when Charlotte Motor Speedway, in collaboration with NASCAR, shared a playful video that caught everyone’s attention. But this time, it wasn’t about racing.
NASCAR drivers were put on the spot and asked one simple question: Which driver would make the best quarterback? The answers poured in, and surprisingly, there was near-universal agreement. One name stood out above the rest: Corey LaJoie. Suddenly, the talk wasn’t just about Super Bowl glory. It turned to LaJoie, suiting up as the next NFL star. With a full-time Cup Series ride not in sight for 2025, should Lajoie try his hand at football?

Is an alternate career already in the making for Corey LaJoie?
Charlotte Motor Speedway stirred up some unexpected Super Bowl excitement with a playful Instagram post. Captioned “Corey LaJoie might be the best quarterback in @NASCAR”, the video featured NASCAR drivers being asked who among them would make the best quarterback. What followed was a lighthearted debate that sparked plenty of buzz online.
Most drivers had one name in mind. Corey LaJoie. Chase Elliott, Bubb Wallace, and Chris Buescher, amongst others, agreed LaJoie had the skills. Michael McDowell added, “Corey though, he was good at it when we saw him throw it around, right?” Even Ty Gibbs and Tyler Reddick seemed to agree too, cementing LaJoie’s status as the paddock’s top quarterback pick.
Standing at 1.85m and weighing over 180 lbs, Corey LaJoie’s height and weight give him a natural edge, making him a solid quarterback contender in theory. His athletic build and strong arm only add to the impression that he could fit right in on the football field. “I have more fun lifting weights and CrossFit-style workout,” LaJoie said in one of his gym workout videos, highlighting his dedication to staying in top physical shape. His reputation for being one of the more athletic drivers reinforces the argument.

LaJoie and NASCAR fans may also remember a standout moment during a rain delay at Michigan in June 2019. In a clip featuring Corey LaJoie and Bubba Wallace, LaJoie is seen tossing a football deep into the stands with impressive accuracy and power. One broadcaster even quipped, “That LaJoie kid has got an arm!” with another exclaiming, “Pretty good!”

While LaJoie was the clear favorite, a few other names were thrown into the mix. Daniel Suárez picked Austin Cindric (1.91m) for his height, while Joey Logano and Austin Cindric nominated Todd Gilliland. Ty Dillon summed up the debate with a humorous take: “A lot of these drivers aren’t athletic… Guys who are taller than me are quite goofy. I don’t think they’re coordinated enough to be a quarterback. So, I’ll take that.”

“Absolutely @coreylajoie or @toddgilliland_ 🥒🏈,” one fan wrote, clearly backing the two most popular choices. Another chimed in, “I absolutely love the mini mic,” bringing attention to the quirky interview setup. Yet another fan played it safe, saying, “I would agree with him (LaJoie), and @austincindric as quarterback are great choices too,” adding Cindric into the mix of potential quarterback stars. Meanwhile, Corey Lajoie’s podcast, Stacking Pennies, also replied to the post with a cheeky pun, “Stacking touchdowns,” they wrote.
Corey LaJoie might only have a part-time ride with Rick Ware Racing but he is no stranger to versatility. Aside from his QB prowess, he will also be stepping into the analyst role for Prime Video’s NASCAR coverage. If the analyst gig doesn’t pan out, though, LaJoie may have a future throwing spirals on the football field. Either way, it seems like Corey always has a backup plan.
