“What if…?” This notion of ambivalence has bugged the minds of NASCAR enthusiasts after the first playoff race at Darlington. As the race gained momentum, there were several loose threads that could only be tied together after the checkered was waved into the air. Apart from the showcasing of stamina and grueling prowess for a race that extended for more than four hours, it was Kyle Larson who was able to tame the “Lady in Black.”

Moreover, there were several close calls for the speedster of Hendrick Motorsports, but the driver was able to overcome all the roadblocks and ticked off another clinical victory that he yearned for. However, the “Lady in Black” also bore witness to a few heartbreaks, especially for Kevin Harvick who had the one last shot to tame the old rugged and unpaved track of Darlington. However, everything went amiss, as Kyle Petty sympathized with the retiring driver.

It was Christopher Bell, who had the fastest track on Sunday and was cruising through the track before misfortune struck the pole-sitter of the race and eventually succumbed to it. Furthermore, it was not just Bell who had been meted out with on-track adversities, a majority of the drivers had fallen victim to a similar fate including Stewart-Haas Racing driver Tony Stewart. A rudimental lapse of judgment proved dearly for the driver and his team.

Owing to this, the former Cup Series driver Kyle Petty who is embroiled in a war of words with 23XI Racing driver Bubba Wallace, seized another golden opportunity to deliver his verdict on the results of the Darlington race. The outgoing driver Kevin Harvick has remained strong and has delivered a spectacular performance and has entered the playoffs. However, the final season for Harvick seems lackluster as he is still eluded from a victory.

The No.4 Ford driver had the opportunity of scoring one, as he took to the lead. However, a single lapse of judgment and entering the pit road before the caution was issued due to the debacle between Tyler Reddick and Ryan Newman, proved fatal for Harvick. As a result, the driver was issued a penalty for pitting when the caution light came out and the pit road closed. The driver had to start from the rear of the field during the restart. A penalty that he failed to recover from and finished 19th in the race.

On account of this, Petty in a video posted by NASCAR expressed, “Big losers for me: Kevin Harvick had a great run and just bad timing, misfortune came down pit road as the caution came out and caught him behind.”

Wallace had denied any pre-race interviews owing to the intensifying playoff pressure. As a result, Petty asserted, “For professional athletes to refuse interviews is unacceptable in any game. Unacceptable. Unacceptable to your fans. Unacceptable to the sport. It’s just not! […]”

“You got to handle it. Put it on your shoulders and carry it. If mentally we are, he is that fragile, then maybe this is not the game for it.”

However, Wallace also had his befitting reply for Petty. Ahead of the race in Darlington, he stated, “Well, I am here to fill my media obligations before the race. Yeah, I got a word count though. If I start speaking too many words I start feeling anxious and mentally fragile. Now on the sh*t that matters, we have done some good adjustments I believe.”

Nevertheless, with the first playoff race over, two more races to decide the fate of these drivers to enter the next stage of the playoffs. It will be interesting to see if Kevin Harvick is able to notch a victory or will he bow out of the season early?
