NASCAR is set to make history with its first-ever street race in Chicago, Illinois. Far from basking in the glory of NASCAR’s innovation, diversity, and growth, critics have raised concerns about safety, logistics, and the event’s environmental impact. Yet, dedicated fans and NASCAR officials stand firmly in support of the race, emphasizing the meticulous preparations and measures taken to drive the event safe to its conclusion.
Many issues work in favor of the critics. The narrow, bumpy, and unpredictability that entails the street race event, the cost of organizing such an event (worth approximately $50 million), the closure of streets and potential inconvenience for residents causing traffic jams, environmental concerns focus on noise and air pollution—collectively gives the gist of the red flags raised against the event.

Many believe setting up and running the Chicago street race is complex and costly. However, NASCAR has demonstrated its logistical expertise by minimizing disruption to daily life during the months-long construction process. Street closures were meticulously planned, communicated well in advance, and alternative routes were provided to minimize inconvenience. However, the realities that locals have been facing paint a different picture.
This Chicagoan remarked, “Sucks for all of us in Chicago! Traffic has been miserable, hotels aren’t sold out, and no one from family, friends, work etc, no one is going. Won’t even touch base on ticket prices, smh.”
its interesting to see the difference in coverage from people who live here (who almost universally hate how disruptive its been for traffic and park access) and the general race/business press.
Hope it works out for NASCAR. But I also kinda hope they don't come back here.

The event will generate substantial revenue which is expected to be $113 million and $30 million in taxes for the city. This will directly bolster the local economy and tourism. Fans attending the event are expected to immerse themselves in a world-class experience. Ticket options, hospitality, entertainment, and activities abound, including concerts, food trucks, merchandise stalls, and various viewing areas such as grandstands, terraces, and clubs are available around the course.
Hey Joe. Are you going to do a podcast on the race? Curious to hear about the economic impact to the city from producing a race of this size (similar to F1 in Vegas).

Addressing environmental concerns, NASCAR has implemented measures to minimize the race’s impact and promote sustainability. Critics argue that the street race contributes to environmental harm, including noise pollution, air pollution, and wasteful resource consumption.
It might look awesome to ppl who pretend they're invading empty space, but for us who LIVE HERE, it's a 6-wk long nightmare.
Green space closed, unbearable noise, prison fencing everywhere, all other activities forced to close
Thanks for ruining our homes so you can have fun.

NASCAR has prioritized safety in the design and execution of the Chicago street race, incorporating feedback from drivers and teams. Concrete barriers, tire walls, and catch fences line the track, offering protection for both drivers and spectators. Going as far as ensuring the Police Department of Chicago won’t take any days off ahead of the race. Specially equipped cars with advanced brakes, tires, and suspension systems ensure they can handle the unique challenges of street conditions rather than a speedway.
NASCAR also maintains a comprehensive contingency plan, with emergency vehicles on standby. Die-hard fans have praised the safety measures, shutting down the critics pointing out every single thing for no specific reason. This motorsports fan shared pictures from their recent visit to the track. Comparing their experiences from watching a live F1 and NASCAR track, surveying the gear as well as the pit crew members just a few feet away was “such a cool experience” for them.
Unlike F1, the access for the fans has been unbelievable, I was able to visit the site & take pictures of the haulers and see the pit guys unloading war wagons and cars from just a few ft away. Such a cool exp. The set up is just right there in the city center amongst everyone. pic.twitter.com/OBNo9JNzP3
