Richard Childress, despite being one of the iconic names in the Cup Series, is witnessing a time to forget. In spite of having an experienced and well-versed driver in Kyle Busch, the team has struggled deeply in the 2024 campaign. Along with Rowdy, even his teammate Austin Dillon has dealt with a miserable time on the track.
With a lack of victory, Richard Childress Racing is undoubtedly undergoing a difficult season. While efforts have been made to amend things on and off the track, it has been in vain so far. However, Richard Childress will find comfort in knowing that the team’s future lies in reliable hands.

The 2024 Cup Series season has been a nightmare for Richard Childress, to say the least. With 22 races in the regular season, it is appalling how not a single victory is registered despite having the likes of Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon. There are plenty of ongoing issues at RCR, ones that need to be addressed quickly.
One common issue seen with Busch and Dillon is that their car lacks speed. While it has been an important factor in the team’s dismal performance this season, there are problems behind the scenes that need to be fixed as well. Just a few weeks back, Kyle Busch was forced to start at the rear despite being poised to start 24th because of an oil leak at Pocono Raceway.
Unfortunately, this was the fourth time Busch faced a pre-race penalty, reflecting the state of affairs at Richard Childress Racing. In addition to that, six more pit road penalties have come in Rowdy’s way. This includes speeding at Atlanta, sliding through his pit box at Las Vegas, safety violations at Bristol and Charlotte, a commitment line violation at Bristol, and a tire violation at Charlotte.
Kyle Busch was just asked about the competition changes at RCR and the retirement of Andy Petree
“Change sometimes lends itself to an open opportunity – Hopefully for the better.”

What’s your perspective on:
Can Richard Childress Racing bounce back from this slump with Kyle Busch and Austin Dillon at the helm?
Have an interesting take?
Despite the team’s Vice President Andy Petree’s retirement, things haven’t changed at RCR. Austin Dillon has just not looked close to his best. Currently, he sits 32nd in the regular season standings with just two top-10 finishes this campaign. As for Busch, he sits 18th in the regular season standings and is 112 points below the playoff cutline.
While things look bleak at RCR right now, Richard Childress will find some respite taking a look at the Xfinity Series. Both full-time drivers Austin Hill and Jesse Love look in fine touch this campaign. With Hill registering two wins, eight top-five finishes, and 13 top-ten finishes this season, his form is more than impressive. At the same time, Love’s one win, five top-five, and nine top-10 finishes have been a fine watch as well.

With both Hill and Love set for the playoffs, Richard Childress will be looking forward to how they perform. On the other hand, given the consistency shown by the duo, it gives Childress confidence for the future. The maturity shown by these drivers is what will help them shine in the Cup Series. Should one of them go on to win the Xfinity this season, it will only be the icing on the cake.
In fact, Richard Childress must be delighted after learning about the deep bond the duo shares.

For any NASCAR team to succeed, the drivers must get along despite the competitive nature of the sport. Like at Hendrick Motorsports, all four drivers share the unity despite having their agendas of doing well in the Cup Series. Luckily for Richard Childress’ Xfinity garage, Jesse Love and Austin Hill share a similar bond.

Austin Hill, being the senior among the two, takes his share of responsibility in guiding the rookie in Jesse Love. Speaking about the helpful environment at RCR, Love shared some interesting details. As reported by NBCSports.com back in April 2024, he said, “At RCR, there’s three really good teammates that are really willing to help each other out and give you honest feedback.”
Jesse Love further added, “(Austin has) been 19 years old. So he has all this experience I don’t have that I can ask him and Kyle (Busch) and Austin (Dillon). They’ve been to all these places that I haven’t been to. I kinda learned that from my dad — it’s like ask the people that have been where you’re at before and they’ll help you out a lot.”
Having said that, Hill and Love seem to work very well together despite having an age difference of 11 years. The reason behind it is their similar approach to the game. Speaking about it, Hill said, “I think one thing that’s very similar with the both of us is just the drive that we have to be great. Like we want to go win every race that there is and if we don’t win, we’re both frustrated. You guys don’t see it on our Monday morning meetings, but we’re very frustrated.”

At the same time, the 30-year-old explained how he and Love strive to be among the best. He said, “We want us to be the top dogs. We talk about it a lot when we’re in our meetings that, ‘Oh, (JR Motorsports) has this or the (Joe Gibbs Racing) cars have this or that.’ We want to be the guys that when they go to their Monday meetings, they’re like, ‘Oh man, RCR cars, they’re just hard to beat.’”
Certainly, Austin Hill and Jesse Love’s mentality is not only impressive but also inspiring. To have drivers like them would indeed give Richard Childress better sleep in the night. Having said that, it remains to be seen how they adapt and perform in the Cup Series whenever they get the chance.
