Martin Truex Jr will roll off the grid at P19 this Sunday for one of the shortest races in this year’s NASCAR calendar—the Enjoy Illinois 300 at WWT Raceway. That starting position has often been a disadvantage in the last two years, considering 240 uncharacteristic rotations around Gateway’s 1.25-mile flat asphalt surface. But a bigger story surrounding the 2017 Cup Series champ is his speculated absence from the premier division, which was laid out in rumors even before the onset of the 2024 season.
As we stand, the whispers are constantly turning louder for MTJ, owing to his well-known habit of playing things close to the vest. Add to that the 2025 silly season making waves well in advance, courtesy of unresolved charter negotiations and plenty of assets up for grabs. And diehards have been eager to know exactly what comes of the #19 driver’s future in what would be his 20th full-time season racing in the highest echelon of professional stock-car racing, the NASCAR Cup Series.

Martin Truex Jr is heading to Gateway, sitting on a 30-race winless streak. The New Jersey native has certainly been consistent this season, cracking the podium twice, first at Bristol and then at Dover. Additionally, Truex Jr has finished in the top 5 five times in the last 14 races. A win has been well in due, as one could derive from his solid results as of late. Instead, his Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin and Christopher Bell have been the ones racking up all the accolades and records this season. Even young Ty Gibbs has been tremendous so far as well, winning his first-ever career pole in the Cup Series only last week at Charlotte.
Regardless, MTJ’s narrative lays out a story of mentorship, one of reaching consequences like potentially witnessing the charismatic driver step away from his seat altogether. Not even halfway through the season, rumors swirl about TRD hopeful Corey Heim replacing Truex Jr behind the wheel of the #19 Toyota. Now, with the news of Stewart-Haas Racing’s sudden but not unexpected implosion, the mill has been churning out speculations in overdrive. According to various sources, any of the 6 drivers soon-to-be without a job, currently claiming Tony Stewart’s disappearing team, could very well drive the #19 in 2025.
Adding fuel to the fire, Truex Jr told Frontstretch earlier in Charlotte, “I have no idea what I’m doing next year.” Prepping for Gateway this week, he took it one step further by leaving no bits to chew on for those hoping for him to put an end to his decorated NASCAR career. When Bob Pockrass of FOX asked MTJ if there was “any update yet on next year,” he emphatically shut down the heavily speculated question with an empathic “No.”

As one would say, tomorrow is a mystery, but today is the ‘present.’ Consequently, it appears Martin Truex Jr is a staunch believer in that saying with his focus lasered upon his current fortunes, or lack thereof. Moving on from the previous question, the 44-year-old was happy to answer Pockrass about “what was off today,” after qualifying as the lowest-finishing JGR Toyota for the Enjoy Illinois 300. He would explain, “Just really tight… I’m not sure. It’s really, really tight so just missed it.”
It remains to be seen if MTJ has truly “missed it.” However, knowing that the last two race-winners of the announced 240-lap encounter, Joey Logano and Kyle Busch, both started their respective races from positions within the top 10, MTJ’s prospects look bleak hoping for the derivative unexpected.

Regardless, although the Cup Series drivers are still yet to see more than three years of racing at Gateway, Hence, a lot of these derivatives are still largely unproven. But the stats stand as they are, and the unpredictable excitement of NASCAR can only enhance them further with this year’s outing in Madison, IL. Moreover, it is also important to remember that MTJ has cracked the top 6 both times the Cup Series moved to WWT Raceway in its first two years as part of the season’s calendar.
Interestingly, MTJ has even claimed a win at Gateway en route to winning his first-ever Busch Series championship, back in 2004, when the difficult-to-pass racetrack had an annual outing on the second-tier schedule. Keeping this information in the background, Truex Jr explained his revised optimism about the NextGen car in an unrelated statement.

He told the Press of Atlantic City, “The racing there was incredible with this NextGen car. We were going back there thinking that this was going to be one-groove with everyone on the bottom and it’s going to be hard to pass, and that’s not been the case at all. We use the whole racetrack and that’s what makes it good now. It’s a fun track with really long straightaways.”
Having that said, the two-time regular season champ currently stands at a +900 for a 2024 season-first victory at Gateway, according to DraftKings. Can MTJ make his fans happy amidst all the unwarranted uncertainties plaguing his 2025 future? We find out at the Enjoy Illinois 300.
