After winning three races in the final five regular-season races, Roush Fenway Keselowski Racing seemed to be on the up, but things have not been going that great in the playoffs. On Sunday at Kansas, Brad Keselowski finished in ninth place, and Chris Buescher could only manage 27th after a late issue with his #17 car. But RFK co-owner Keselowski believes that he got the best possible result.

For Keselowski, it was not as bad as his teammate’s. He finished the race in ninth place and earned 41 points, and he also won stage two at Kansas, earning one valuable playoff point. Things did not go quite as well for his teammate, however, who suffered a tire blowout in the closing stages of the race.

Speaking to a reporter after the race at Kansas, Keselowski revealed that his finishing position and the stage two win were the best possible outcomes that he could have expected given how the car was running all weekend.

He also praised his pit crew for making a good call in the second stage, which allowed the veteran to win it and bring home a valuable playoff point, capping off Sunday as a “good day.”

“We just had a really solid day. To win the stage and good pit call at the end of stage two to win that stage and, kind of maximized all we had, so. You know we were probably a tenth-place car and to get all those points is a good day,” the RFK driver and co-owner said.

His teammate Chris Buescher, on the other hand, had a disastrous end to the race. With just seven laps to go in the final stage, the #17’s right rear tire blew up and a caution was called. At the time, he was running in 12th place, 24 points ahead of the cutline.

But that one incident towards the end of the race completely ruined what might have been a good finish for this year’s Richmond, Michigan, and Daytona winner, as he could only manage to finish in 27th place. So it wasn’t the best day for RFK Racing.

Buescher was a man on a roll towards the end of the regular season, winning back-to-back races at Richmond and Michigan and finishing everything off with a dominant performance at Daytona in the final regular-season race of 2023. Going into the playoffs, he was seen as one to watch out for, but it hasn’t really worked out the way he wanted it to.

But owner Brad Keselowski sees this as an opportunity for the whole team to improve as the playoffs roll on, giving the example of how the team dealt with the pressure despite everything that did not go to plan in Kansas.

Keselowski believes that despite all the problems that his team faced, they did a good job of getting him into the top 10 and earning that one playoff point after winning the second stage.

The NASCAR veteran said that they would need similar levels of improvement in the future to go as deep into the playoffs as possible.

“It’s what we need, to have improvements like this and score a lot of points and improve our chance to advance to the next round,” Keselowski said.

RFK Racing had been on a tear in the final few races of the regular season, but the momentum seems to have cooled off a little bit. The team needs to find that momentum in time for Bristol if they want to get both of their drivers into the round of 12.
