In the world of motorsports, controversies and disputes are not uncommon. Currently, the racing community has been buzzing with discussions and speculations surrounding Hendrick Motorsports and their ongoing fiasco with NASCAR. The contentious issue at hand involves the partial rescission of their penalty. This decision has left many questioning the transparency and fairness of the decision-making process.
Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin too weighed in on the matter. He expressed his concerns about the impact of this decision on the teams, owners, and the sport as a whole. Meanwhile, the heart of the issue is concerned with the lack of transparency therein.

Denny Hamlin calls for transparency from NASCAR
Denny Hamlin expressed his thoughts on the recent controversy, saying, “I know that team part of it, the owners part of it. The teams are mad about this. There’s no question. NASCAR’s mad about it and the teams are mad about… There’s only one team that’s happy about the result, that’s for sure.” He emphasized that this decision has potentially disrupted the entire business model of the racing industry.
However, the veteran driver pointed out that using past precedents for penalties is not applicable in this case, as it’s a new rule and a new era for the cars. Hamlin then said, “To say that yes, we agree that they broke the rules. But we’re gonna give them this back. It’s just a weird spot.”
He suspected that NASCAR will quickly revise the rulebook to clarify the penalties and prevent any future confusion. According to Hamlin, NASCAR might do away with monetary fines altogether, so that “it’s all points, no money.”
Moreover, he urged transparency from NASCAR. Since the parts in question are supposed to be factory off-the-shelf components, he questioned, “Why can’t we be transparent?” He doesn’t see any reason to hide information from the public or the media. Hamlin recalled how, in the past, when his team faced disqualification, they openly displayed the problematic part for everyone to see.
Furthermore, Hamlin mentioned that in the past, NASCAR would confiscate illegal parts and display them openly. He questioned why the same transparency couldn’t be applied now, especially since these are factory parts. Hamlin feels that displaying the parts in question would help put an end to the weeks-long speculation and promote a better understanding of the situation.

Hendrick Motorsports may have more trouble headed their way. The team narrowly avoided a substantial points loss after partially winning their appeal against NASCAR for tampering with hood louvers prior to the Cup Series race at Phoenix. Nevertheless, the prospect of another penalty looms as NASCAR’s recent actions following the event at Richmond suggest further scrutiny.
Following the post-race inspection at Richmond, NASCAR revealed that William Byron and Alex Bowman’s cars were taken to the R&D Center for further investigation. Now, if they find anything they do not like, we would see a slurry of penalties headed HMS’ way.
