Is the NASCAR community's response to Hurricane Helene a testament to their deep-rooted Southern values?

Hurricane Helene has caused havoc since it made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend region. The Hurricane has brought the NASCAR community together as many relief efforts are underway. Recently NASCAR veteran Greg Biffle was seen in his personal helicopter delivering supplies to those affected in western North Carolina.

Even Joe Gibbs Racing used their helicopters to collect and drop essential goods like water, tarps, and non-perishable food. Additionally,  23XI Racing joined in as team co-owner Michael Jordan donated $1 million to relief efforts, contributing $500,000 each toward the NC Disaster Relief Fund and the Second Harvest of Metrolina. Most Recently, Hendrick Motorsports, along with three other companies, have made a significant contribution to aiding the relief efforts.

Hendrick Motorsports was quick to react to help the people in the affected areas. The team has been flying humanitarian aid missions since last weekend, mainly partnering with Samaritan’s Purse, a humanitarian aid organization. They have been using two company helicopters, making daily flights from Concord, North Carolina, to various locations in the western United States. According to their website, their helicopters have assisted fire departments, at hospitals and nursing homes, extracting citizens and providing critical supplies to others. According to the team, their relief flights, which began September 28th and will continue indefinitely, have already executed more than 100 missions.

In addition to their ongoing relief flights, Hendrick Motorsports, together with Hendrick Automotive Group, Sonic Automotive, and Speedway Motorsports, has pledged a significant contribution of $2 million to Samaritan’s Purse. This donation will directly support disaster relief efforts in western North Carolina and other affected regions of the Southeast.

The companies in a joint statement said, “Our organizations represent more than 22,000 team members across the country, with thousands based here in the Southeast and many with connections that make this cause profoundly personal. Our neighbors in hard-hit areas face immense challenges in rebuilding their homes, communities and lives, and we will stand alongside them.”

Only last week, the four companies held a relief drive at Charlotte Motor Speedway and North Wilkesboro Speedway where more than 400 pallets of donated items were transported to North Carolina counties impacted by the hurricane. According to them, their deep roots in western North Carolina and the Southeast region urged them to help the ones in need.

Our companies share a commitment to community involvement and deep roots in western North Carolina and the Southeast region, and we feel a moral obligation to provide support and encourage others to engage in this effort through giving or volunteering,” the statement further read. Not just HMS, but many other NASCAR teams have been actively helping the Hurricane victims.

JR Motorsports, owned by NASCAR veteran Dale Earnhardt Jr. too, collected donations of essential items and distributed them to the affected areas. This came in collaboration with the Late Model racing series, CARS Tour, which too is co-owned by Dale Jr. along with Kevin Harvick, Jeff Burton, and Trackhouse Racing team owner Justin Marks.

Even Joey Logano Foundation, an organization co-founded by Joey Logano and his wife, Brittany Logano, has been tirelessly contributing to the relief works. The foundation has pledged $250,000 in hurricane relief efforts. The first $25,000 is being donated to the Convoy of Hope, a non-profit organization working on humanitarian grounds.

Similarly, Kaulig Racing is actively involved in the relief efforts, collecting supplies and urging the community to donate items to their race shop in Welcome, North Carolina. Even Trackhouse Racing, owned by Justin Marks, has partnered up with Aerial Recovery, a specialized team trained in humanitarian disaster response. The category 4 Hurricane has left many displaced, especially because of the heavy flooding in the North Carolina and Eastern Tennessee regions.
