The world of NASCAR is filled with secrets and strategies, where teams are always pushing the boundaries of what’s allowed to gain that crucial competitive advantage. And now, a mysterious admission from Denny Hamlin on his podcast has shed some light on the recent penalty handed down to the Richard Childress Racing team.

In a recent episode of his podcast, Actions Detrimental, Denny Hamlin made comments that shed light on the competitive advantage tactics used by NASCAR teams. The #11 driver who himself got into trouble and faced backlash for intentionally wrecking Ross Chastain a few months back, admitted that manipulating the underwing assembly on race cars could provide teams with an aerodynamic advantage.

Hamlin explained how teams, or rather how Richard Childress Racing, in this case, made their underwing more flexible by not tightening bolts or over-tightening them, allowing the underwing or flex to move and create more downforce.

When questioned about this further, Hamlin said, “Yeah, you’re certainly gonna do it to gain an advantage for the downforce. Now, Martinsville – is it a juice worth of squeeze, probably not but you know I listen to people say ‘it’s not an advantage at this track’ trust me if they’re doing it on this track, they’re doing it last week and the week before & you know it’s not something that isn’t just happening during that week, it just got caught that week.”

“But yeah you do it to gain an aerodynamic advantage. ” Hamlin’s comments suggest that playing these games with aerodynamics is not a new concept in NASCAR.

While the games teams play with aerodynamics may seem like a creative way to gain an advantage, they also come with risks. Any violation discovered during post-race inspection can result in penalties, fines, and suspensions, which can ultimately impact a team’s chances of making the playoffs and winning the championship.

As you may know, Hamlin’s admission comes on the heels of NASCAR’s announcement of an L1-level penalty issued to Austin Dillon’s No. 3 Richard Childress Racing team for an illegal underwing assembly discovered on their car following the recent race at Martinsville Speedway. Dillon’s car was found to be in violation of Sections 14.6.1 A&B, which govern the mounting and hardware of the underwing assembly.

The penalty resulted in the loss of 60 driver and owner points, as well as five playoff points, and a $75,000 fine for crew chief Keith Rodden, who was suspended for the next two Cup Series (Talladega and Dover).

The penalty imposed on Dillon’s team has significant implications for their standings in the Cup Series. Dillon has dropped from 21st to 28th in the standings, putting him 84 points behind the current playoff cutoff line.

“I would probably would rather make a statement after the appeal process to really get a better grasp on the whole situation,” Dillon said, as per Yahoo Sports, before qualifying for this past Sunday’s race.

Hamlin’s comments are significant because they provide insight into the tactics used by some teams to gain an advantage on the track. While these tactics are not new, they are becoming increasingly scrutinized by NASCAR officials. As the sport becomes more competitive, teams are willing to take greater risks to gain an edge.
