When Floyd Mayweather announced that his new NASCAR venture, The Money Racing Team, would compete in the Cup Series in 2022, American sporting fans united to support the new crew. And now, the team is looking to make an entry for the second time into the prestigious Daytona 500, along with plans to cement their long-term commitment by participating full-time in 2025 and beyond. However, the journey thus far has been everything but peachy.

Amidst sponsorship woes and a lack of funding, the team has failed to gain real momentum toward its success and has failed to build on its 2022 entry this year. But Floyd Mayweather’s team, which is run by Becky Auchmoody and Willy Auchmoody, remains hard at work to find a ray of hope for their 2024 campaign. Amidst the chaos, an unsurprising face has taken over the proceedings to turn things around.

How is a teacher leading Floyd Mayweather’s NASCAR racing team?

When Auchmoodys joined forces with Floyd Mayweather to start The Money Racing Team, the iconic boxer had to take a backseat in operations owing to his commitments to entertainment. Without his presence being felt daily, the star of the show has quickly become Becky Auchmoody.

Auchmoody has been hard at work trying to balance her teaching job in the daytime with her executive role as a team owner at night. She was quoted by Forbes: “We’re a mom-and-pop business at this point. We don’t have a huge facility. We have a handful of employees. It’s very humbling because we’ve had so many people support us.”

Although the team ran four races in 2022, their 2023 campaign was reduced to two short races due to a lack of funding. Their Daytona 500 qualifications in both seasons, however, increase their chances of getting sponsorships in the future.

She added, “To make the Daytona 500 not once, but twice, it’s really surreal.” Auchmoody also reflected on their mediocre 2023 outing and shared, “We wanted to compete in more races [in 2023], but it just didn’t work out. We were prepared, started to get everything ready for the year, and it just didn’t follow through. Every race is a learning experience for us. Every time we hit the track, we want to put forward the best effort we can.”

Although they aim to qualify for the Daytona 500 a third time in a row, it is far from easy. There have already been three open car entries revealed, with the likes of BJ McLeod, Anthony Alfredo, and David Ragan taking the wheel. If Jimmie Johnsons adds to that list with Legacy Motor Club, things could become challenging for TMT Racing and their prospects for a Daytona 500 qualification.

While Floyd Mayweather would certainly want the team to continue building on their Daytona shenanigans, the work Becky Auchmoody has done has been incredible. But how did Mayweather get involved in the first place?

It all began when Rebecca Auchmoody took a trip with her husband to meet Mayweather in 2019. Chatting up the details about their new venture in Mayweather’s Ritz Carlton condo in Los Angeles, the duo answered the heavy-hitting questions. Floyd Mayweather had a rather simple question to ask, however: ‘How much money is this going to cost me?”.

The answer was laid out by Willy Auchmoody in an instant. He shared, ‘There’s an opportunity for you to get involved in our sport with minimal expenses. I need startup money to get going, but with your fame and your social media following, we can build off of that.” to which Mayweather responded, “So it’s not going to cost me a lot of money?” prompting Auchmoody to retort with, “It can cost you whatever you want it to cost you. But I’m not sitting here saying, Give me 5, 10, or 15 million dollars.” Certainly, an answer that satisfied the money man, he concluded, “I respect that.”

It’s safe to say Floyd Mayweather’s money is in the right hands. Sharing his appreciation for Becky Auchmoody’s heroics, Floyd Mayweather added in a statement, “We are really excited to see TMT Racing continue to grow under Becky’s leadership; she has been the heart of our team since day one. Her involvement is great for NASCAR and the empowerment of women in sports.”
