From Lee Petty to Jimmie Johnson, NASCAR has fielded many racing greats ever since its inception in 1949. Over the years, a total of 35 different drivers have won the Cup Series championship. Among those drivers, the most notable name that stands out is Dale Earnhardt. Accumulating numerous awards and accolades throughout his NASCAR career, Dale Earnhardt’s impact on the sport is indelible.
While there is no contest that Dale Earnhardt is one of the most distinguished drivers to ever step foot on NASCAR’s ovals, NASCAR legend Donnie Allison believes otherwise.

Donnie Allison snubs Dale Earnhardt
After winning the Cup Series championship seven times, Dale Earnhardt is tied with Richard Petty and Jimmie Johnson for the most number of championship titles. Highly aggressive on the track and not shy of bumps and spin-outs, Dale Sr. earned the moniker Intimidator’. Staying true to his name, fellow drivers were intimidated when they caught sight of Dale Sr.’s iconic #3 Chevy charging ahead in their rearview mirrors.
Competing in 676 races over the course of twenty-seven years, the Intimidator earned 76 Cup race wins. Inducted into NASCAR’s Hall of Fame in 2010, Dale Sr was even named to NASCAR’s 75 Greatest Drivers list in 2023. Dale Earnhardt, given his impressive track record, was undoubtedly NASCAR’s G.O.A.T. in his era, but Donnie Allison would beg to differ. Speaking to Dale Earnhardt Jr on the Dale Jr Download podcast, Allison revealed the greatest driver ever.
Snubbing Junior’s now-deceased father’s name in front of him, Allison said, “Well, I’m gonna tell you something about (A.J.) Foyt okay? That is the best race car driver I know, and I know a lot of them, and I’ve known a lot of them. But let me tell you something, that man, everything he got in, he won in”, said Allison about
Although Donnie Allison snubbing Dale Earnhardt’s name as the greatest driver came as a shock, A. J. Foyt’s achievements do justify the NASCAR legend’s greatest driver comment.

A.J Foyt’s illustrious racing career
Starting out racing Midget cars at the age of 18, A. J. Foyt quickly jumped over to Sprint cars before finally making his Indy debut in 1958. Raking up win after win, Foyt won the Indianapolis 500 a record four times in 1961, 1964, 1967, and 1977, becoming the only driver to achieve this feat.

Foyt even collected the prestigious Daytona 500 win in 1972 and added a 24 Hours of Daytona win to his name. To add to his illustrious career wins, Foyt also won the 24 Hours of Le Mans in his debut race in 1967. Inducted into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in 1989, A. J. Foyt was also named to NASCAR’s 50 Greatest Drivers list in 1998.
