When you are sitting behind the wheel of a Next Gen car and throttling at speeds nearing 200 mph, even the slightest slip can be disastrous or even fatal. This is why every racing league pays immense attention to the safety of their drivers. Especially NASCAR, from the late 1970s, has transitioned from a go-as-fast-as-you-can kind of sport to a much more safety-oriented one.
However, loopholes have always been there and accidents are not entirely avoidable. And one such loophole has resulted in Ryan Blaney of Team Penske suffering concussion-like symptoms after having crashed hard into a concrete wall at Nashville Speedway back at the end of June.

Bubba Wallace’s spotter sides with Ryan Blaney
According to the number 12 Ford Mustang driver, he received a contact from behind on lap 146, lost control, and veered off the track to collide with a concrete wall near the pit road exit. He called for help on the radio and was taken to the infield care center. Blaney finished 36th but with a DNF.
In a recent episode of the Door Bumper Clear podcast, NASCAR insider Casey Boat asked Taylor Moyer’s views on what he thought about this crash to which the latter sided with Blaney.
Moyer said, “I stand with Blaney…my thing is these guys put their lives at risk. There’s no reason to not have it (safety barriers). Money can’t be the factor because we’re always doing everything as an organization to save money and be safer…so just spend the money and be safe.”
Spotter for the #23 Camry driver Bubba Wallace, Freddie Kraft sided with Blaney as well. According to him, it is useless to say that Blaney might have hit a weird spot. When there are 40 cars racing each other at full speed, just one nudge to a single car can wreck many others in a chain reaction and nobody knows what the effect will be on the last car that receives the impact.
Freddie recalled the incident at Nashville and exclaimed, “Blaney just gets turned halfway down the straightaway and ends up sliding through the grass and hitting at a weird angle and I noticed, the car was destroyed. That was the hardest I’ve seen a car crumple up in the front.”
NASCAR released a statement after the crash, saying, “Engineers work closely with safety experts on the implementation of barriers on the track as we do following every race weekend. We will evaluate all available data and make any necessary improvements.”

However, the fans did not look so sure of NASCAR’s concern about the safety of its drivers.

Fans lash out at NASCAR for being careless
NASCAR has made adjustments to the front and the rear of the cars to make them more crumple on impacts so that the driver does not receive the hardest blow. However, the fans did not quite approve of a bare concrete wall right at the end of the pit lane.

A fan said, “@NashvilleSuperS I believe You need to cover that Concrete wall with either SAFER barrier or Tires.”
Another one close to go rather hard on NASCAR and exclaimed, “Again..NO excuse for no safer barrier there!”

Most of them reiterated what Taylor Moyer said about spending money and being safe. One of them stated, “I still don’t understand how it’s 2023 and every concrete wall isn’t covered in safer barrier. Just being cheap at this point over safety”
