Second highest on the list of drivers with the most Most Popular Driver awards, Dale Earnhardt Jr is a certified fan favorite. He won the award 15 times before he retired in 2017. Even after retirement, fans haven’t yet relinquished hope. They wish to see him come back in some shape or form.

A return of Dale Earnhardt Jr. is top-ranked on the list of fan preferences. However, the NASCAR legend has deferred to the occurrence of that event for quite a long time.
Yet, there is another way the driver can make his return to NASCAR – more specifically, the Cup Series. That is through team ownership. Dale Jr. already veered into team ownership with JR Motorsports. The team, in its current avatar, has been in the Xfinity Series since 2006.
Junior talks about his Cup Series plans
But Dale Jr has admitted that he is looking to enter the Cup Series as well. “I’m a potential owner in the Cup Series. We are actively out here talking to these teams about what these charters are worth. Who’s willing to sell one? How do we become an owner?” he said on the Dale Jr Download podcast.

“The RTA is basically telling me that this charter that I want to buy is a losing proposition. It’s broken. That I don’t want to buy this charter now, because it’s not a successful business. They basically said they can’t make any money, they’re all losing money.”
His primary concern, however, is in relation to the cost of the charter for a Cup Series team, estimated to be around $30 million. “In less than a decade, a charter has went from $2 million to $28-30 million. No way I’m going to spend $30 million for a charter that’s going to operate at a loss,” he said.

If Dale Jr. were to devise a solution to propel his team to the Cup Series, plenty of people will be happy.
