Today’s the day when a multi-billionaire and one of the world’s richest people completed “freeing the bird” and we remember when NASCAR caused a massive drop in value for one of his ‘pets’. On 21st June 2021 at the Nashville Superspeedway NASCAR nudged Elon Musk with a tongue-in-cheek tweet.
The #dogecar has crashed. 😢

The Dogecar was featured for a limited time in NASCAR after being created out of a crowdfunded operation. It was funded by the Reddit community for the first time in 2014. A sponsorless Josh Wise and Phil Parsons Racing agreed to a full Dogecoin livery after fans on Reddit were able to generate $50,000 in funding for Wise’s entry to Talladega.
The joke continued running, and in 2021 we saw Stefan Parsons, son of Phil Parsons, sport the Dogecoin livery on his #99 car in the NASCAR Xfinity Series at Nashville Superspeedway. Stefan however could not do too well in the race as he crashed out of Stage 2 after he crashed into the barriers. His crash mirrored the fortune of the crypto backing his car. Dogecoin had fallen by 23% in the 24 hours preceding the race and was over 64% down from its all-time high.
Parsons ended the race in last place as a result of the crash. But NASCAR made the most of the crash, tagging the $224 billion worth Elon Musk – famous for promoting Dogecoin – on a video of the crash.
The Shiba Inu-inspired car was mostly a result of jest and never a real contender for races or trophies, but it shows what a community-funded effort can achieve. Truly genius!
NASCAR and electric – could Elon Musk have invested in NASCAR?
Elon Musk has been one of the revolutionary figure in every industry or sector he has entered. From space to social media, he has his foot in every door. His (read: Tesla’s) expertise in electric vehicles could have been used in NASCAR to revolutionize the sport.

Chief Operating Officer, Steve O’Donnell, said “We are exploring some opportunities around an exhibition series in that space [electric vehicles]. And as everyone knows, there’s a huge push across all of our (original equipment manufacturer) partners, and even potentially new OEM partners. So it’s important for us to explore that space. I think there’s a lot of interest from our current partners to be part of that.”
Developments on that end have been slow to come. One of the main concerns/oppositions to the introduction has been “But for us, the race has to be entertaining. Our fans, they love noise. They love the sound, the feel of racing. So if we’re going to get into the electric space, I promise you, it will be entertaining, and it’ll be something that fits into our portfolio and something our fans will be proud of,” said O’Donnell.
