The world of motor racing is not meant for the faint of heart. Being a spectator and witnessing the sport unfold is thrilling, but when delved into deeply, the world of motorsports might send chills down the spines of individuals. It is a known fact that speed often has an adverse effect, but the impact that racers face is exponentially high. And after what happened last year with the former No. 45 Toyota Camry driver, Denny Hamlin seems concerned.
One of the worst effects that drivers in NASCAR face are concussions. These injuries to the head that the racers suffer often turn out to be fatal, as they hinder the basic performance of daily life. While there have been numerous instances where drivers have had to be sidelined from racing or even bid their farewell. Kurt Busch is still recuperating from the brunt of the harrowing nature of racing. However, it seems that there has been more to the incident, as Denny Hamlin threw more light on what all happened at the Pocono Raceway.

When a car running at a speed of 200mph hits a hard, stationary object like the barriers, the impact is beyond comprehension. The jarring and blinding effect often takes years to subside, and no one knows it better than Kurt Busch. It’s been almost a year since the horrific incident involving Kurt Busch took place. Since then, the driver has been sidelined from the world of racing.
The incident occurred last July during the qualifying session at the 2-and-a-half mile-long Pocono Raceway when Busch lost control of his car and directly slammed the right rear of his car against the outside wall. Although the driver was able to climb out of his car on his own accord, he failed the medical test and was barred from driving for the main race.
But it seems that the incident at Pocono wasn’t the only one where the driver faced serious impact, as Denny Hamlin spilled the beans during the pre-race interview in Atlanta. Speaking about Busch’s incident, Hamlin recalled, “I didn’t know, I mean I was sitting on the Pit Road, about to run and I knew he was going to be one that I was gonna have to be to get the pole that day. I have known though that Kurt had a few significant hits prior. too.”
“He’s flown back with me after Bristol a couple of other ones and I guess I could probably just see he was visibly not a 100%, so I think once you just compound those things over and over again it just takes less and less significant impacts.”

Nevertheless, Kurt Busch is still recuperating from the impact and has undergone various therapies to cure the symptoms. Busch had also raised speculation that he might return to the Cup Series in the near future. However, even without being an active driver for 23XI Racing, he is often seen with the other two drivers, Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace. He was also seen in a Cubs game as an umpire during the Chicago race weekend.
Even his brother Kyle Busch accepts the fact that the elder Busch is an indispensable part of Michael Jordan’s team. Speaking to the media in a pre-race conference, the RCR driver was asked, “It’s been a year now that Kurt (Busch) has been out of the car. What are your thoughts on that and what it’s been like the last year with KURT and him recovering?”
To this, the younger brother retorted, “But you know, it was not due to what he wanted as a timeline of stepping aside and being out of the car. But the way it all went down, the way he’s handled it, the way he’s still been a part of 23XI […] I think he’s an instrumental part of some of the success they’ve had early on. We’ll see what his choices are going forward on if he continues that.”
