Is NASCAR ruining the sport with these street course ideas, or is it a necessary evolution?

NASCAR has a lot planned for the future, and we are not only talking about the playoffs or the 2025 season. The officials have already started to work on the future plans beyond next season, and this will include the introduction of new international circuits on the calendar. While the news of the Mexico City track being added to the Cup Series has been spreading like wildfire, there are more new circuits planned.

As NASCAR puts their thoughts into motion, there has been an update on what the officials are planning. This includes not only international tracks being added but also new street races. As NASCAR increases in global popularity, more fans come from different walks of life, and with the new races, the sport is trying to accommodate their interests. It is quite smart to mix things up from the classic oval tracks, and San Diego becomes the next possible street race.

NASCAR is eyeing some exciting changes for the 2025 season. They’re heading to Mexico City for the first points race outside the U.S. in 67 years, and there’s talk of returning to Rockingham Speedway in North Carolina. Plus, they’re mixing up venues and adjusting the schedule. And guess what? Sports Business Journal reported that San Diego might host a street race in 2026.

Nowadays, with Formula 1 growing in popularity, many motorsports fans, the younger ones at least, are enjoying races in the urban jungles of the city. NASCAR is not one to let such a chance go by, as they decided to monetize on the street race trend, and so far it has worked. For the first time in Cup Series history, NASCAR raced on a street course in downtown Chicago. The 12-turn, 2.2-mile course in Grant Park hosted both the NASCAR Cup Series and the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

The outcome of those events has been quite good and fans are enjoying the Chicago circuit, but more fans have started to come ahead to say that they do not appreciate the fact that NASCAR is moving away from its oval circuits. The Chicago race had a good turnout and that might be the reason that NASCAR is trying to implement more street races. But after hearing what fans had to say about reducing oval races, the San Diego track has started to receive backlash from fans on social media.

One fan is really fed up with the new road courses, shouting, “NO MORE F-CKING ROAD COURSES!!!” They clearly miss the traditional oval tracks and feel NASCAR is drifting away from its roots.

Another fan is practically begging for a change, saying, “god please answer my prayers.” They seem desperate for NASCAR to go back to more classic tracks.

Someone else thinks the new direction is just plain bad, stating, “Wow. What a horrible idea.” They didn’t hold back on their dislike for the new road and street courses.

There’s also concern about losing oval races, with one fan hoping, “I sincerely hope that we aren’t going to see yet another oval race taken off the schedule for this.” They value the oval tracks and don’t want to see them replaced.

Lastly, a fan feels they might be in the minority but prefers the old road courses over the new street races, saying, “I’m sure I’m in the minority here, but I’d much prefer them doing away with the street races and bring back some better road.”
