This weekend is the annual 24 Hours of Le Mans endurance race. The 2023 edition is a special one because it marks the 100th anniversary of the first 24 Hours of Le Mans which started back in 1923. Furthermore, the 24 Hours of Le Mans is regarded as 1/3rd of the iconic Triple Crown of Motorsports. To celebrate the centennial event, the who’s who of motorsport showed up to compete, and the race even features a first for the sport.

Additionally, the endurance racing paddock was also filled with a bunch of sporting celebrities. Among them were NBA star, LeBron James, who had the honor of waving the flag to start the race. NFL legend Tom Brady was another guest at the event, along with Ferrari Formula One driver, Charles Leclerc.

It is also worth mentioning that actor Michael Fassbender is at Le Mans, but he is actually a competitor.

The Star-Studded Presence Cannot Mask Issues Facing the Endurance Race

Unfortunately, the hype surrounding this event has not been enough to save it from some glaring issues.

Apparently, there have been complaints about the coverage of the race. Much like the complaints with NASCAR’s Fox coverage, there is a problem with frequent advertisements interrupting the action.

Additionally, the commentary for the event has been either intermittent or non-existent, as per some accounts.

According to NBC Sports’ Nate Ryan, “Watching the world feed of a major-league motor race open with 5 minutes of ambient noise, random grid images and zero analysis/explantation/narration is kinda wild. But there’s LeBron (no interview)! Wait, here’s Tom Brady! We’ll start interviewing him. Then go to commercial!”

Later on, the Garage 56 project announced a star-studded line-up for the #24 Chevrolet Camaro. To be precise, former Le Mans winner Mike Rockenfeller would pilot the car. Alongside him are 7-time NASCAR Cup Series champion Jimmie Johnson and 2009 F1 world champion, Jenson Button.
