The Toyota/Save Mart 350 race at Sonoma Raceway provided fans with an unexpected turn of events when Tyler Reddick, a promising talent from Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing team, suffered a flat tire late in the race. Reddick’s decision to drive across the ‘island’ instead of completing the full course to avoid causing a caution led to NASCAR penalizing him.
While NASCAR didn’t rightly appreciate Reddick’s efforts to prevent a ruckus on the racetrack, fans have expressed their discontent with the decision, arguing that it hindered the young driver’s performance and highlighted flaws in the rule book.

With the pit road already passed, Reddick faced the dilemma of either limping his damaged car around the 1.99-mile course or finding an alternative solution.
He chose the latter and decided to cut across the ‘island,’ the center section between the straightaway leading to Turn 11 and the front stretch. When informed about the penalty, Reddick’s frustration was evident as he said over the team radio, “I went f**king backwards to not bring out a caution.”

While Reddick’s intention was to avoid interfering with the leaders and not cause a caution, NASCAR officials saw it as a violation and penalized him with a pass-through penalty.
NASCAR Cup Series director Brad Moran defended the decision to penalize Reddick, emphasizing the importance of upholding the rules of the sport.
“Obviously, it changes it time and distance of the race,” Moran told SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. “We appreciate the fact he didn’t tear stuff up down the racetrack, but unfortunately, we have rules that you cannot shortcut the course, and that was a shortcut back to pit road”
While Moran appreciated the driver’s “Heads Up Driving,” Reddick too had some thoughts he shared.
“I thought morally it was the right thing to do,” Reddick said, as per RACER. “I didn’t know who was leading at the time, but I knew there was no way I would have made it around that racetrack had I gone the full course. By the time I got to pit road, I would have gotten in the way of the leaders, and it would have been a real mess.”
What further made him win the hearts of his fans was his intent behind the decision. He explained, “I’d do it again, even if I get penalized or penalized worse. I’m not going to ruin someone’s race; especially as it turned out being (his Toyota teammate) Martin Truex’s day. I’m really glad we didn’t bring the caution out there by going around the racetrack and potentially changing the outcome for those guys.”
Despite his good intentions, NASCAR had no choice but to enforce the rule and penalize him accordingly. This, however, did not sit well with the fans, as they had some interesting views on the matter.

Fans Slam NASCAR Over Controversial Decision As They Praise Tyler Reddick
Although NASCAR recognized Reddick’s efforts, fans were not pleased with the subsequent penalty imposed on him. Many believed that NASCAR’s decision was fueled by frustration because they couldn’t manipulate the race outcome by throwing a caution to bunch up the field again. One fan expressed their dissatisfaction, stating, “NASCAR gave Tyler a penalty because they were pissed they couldn’t throw the yellow to bunch up the field again.”
Another fan shared their opinion, saying, “I could’ve lived without the penalty. It wasn’t trying to circumvent anything but a caution. The pit was penalty enough in my opinion.”
One fan appreciated Reddick’s move and said, “The driver cutting back to pit row was a good idea as it didn’t bring out a caution to stop the race and he lost more then a regular stop ! Good call on his part.”
