The Enjoy Illinois 300 at the World Wide Technology Raceway turned out to be a chaotic event filled with unexpected challenges and disappointments for many drivers. One team that experienced a particularly rough race was Michael Jordan’s 23XI Racing team, co-owned by Denny Hamlin. The team faced an embarrassing failure due to brake rotor issues, which further raised questions about their strategies and performance.

Brake rotor failures plagued multiple drivers throughout the race, but it proved to be a major setback for the 23XI Racing team. Both of their drivers, Tyler Reddick and Bubba Wallace, were forced to retire from the race due to these mechanical issues. Reddick’s race came to an end after colliding with the outside wall and subsequently experiencing a brake rotor explosion. Despite his best efforts, the situation worsened, and Reddick had to give up.

In his podcast, ‘Actions Detrimental’, reflecting on the race, Denny Hamlin opened up about the challenges they faced. He mentioned that the issues experienced at Gateway had a significant impact on the racing teams, making strategy calls extremely difficult.

With limited access to data and the internet due to the outage, teams were left to make decisions in the dark, not knowing who was ahead or what strategies their competitors were employing. Hamlin highlighted the importance of having the right information to make informed strategy calls, which was lacking under the circumstances.

“It changed it for the race teams a lot though so when you’re making strategy calls, I saw Rodney Childress’s comment and it’s like I didn’t have any SMT, no laps on tires or fuel so he’s trying to make a strategy call and we’re all in the same boat,” Denny Hamlin said.

“Lot of times when you’re making a strategy call, it’s because you’re looking at a list of who’s got tires, when’s the last time they pitted, how many tires did they take, how many laps on fuel can they go and you take all that information and you put it in a pot and stir it up and say, ‘alright here’s the best move for me’ and so when you’re riding blind like that, you really don’t know who’s in front of you and what strategy they’re on so it won’t make your call as informed as it would have been normally.”

Frustrations Mount for 23XI as Their Struggles Continue

The frustrations peaked for the team when Wallace, who had managed to hang on until the very end of the race, also suffered a brake rotor failure. Just as he was on the brink of securing another top-5 finish for his team, Wallace crashed into the wall, ending his race prematurely. The faulty rotors had not only cost the team valuable points but also damaged their reputation.

The problems at the World Wide Technology Raceway extended beyond the brake rotor failures. As Hamlin pointed out, the track faced an internet outage that affected the broadcast and the teams’ access to data. MRN Radio, a popular NASCAR broadcasting platform, was knocked off the air for a significant portion of the race, forcing it to switch to alternate programming.

The issues faced by the 23XI Racing team and the overall chaos of the race have led to questions about the team’s performance and strategies. As a relatively new team with high expectations, Michael Jordan’s venture into NASCAR has attracted attention as well as scrutiny. The failure to secure a win so far this season has raised doubts about the team’s capabilities and their ability to meet fans’ expectations.
