The August schedule of the NASCAR Cup Series took an unexpected twist at Michigan International Speedway as rain clouds loomed large over the FireKeepers Casino 400. The 23rd race of the season, crucial with playoffs drawing near, faced a temporary halt on Sunday after 74 laps due to Mother Nature’s relentless downpour. However, Michael Jordan’s driver executed a brilliant move, leaving seasoned driver Denny Hamlin trailing in his wake.
The drama unfolded during Stage 2, as the ominous rain clouds descended upon the speedway, sending the field to pit road for shelter. At that moment, Tyler Reddick showcased his driving prowess, claiming the lead with impressive finesse.

Tyler Reddick, the tenacious driver behind the wheel of the #45 Toyota, led the pack when the race hit pause. But with the likes of Alex Bowman, Kyle Larson, and Martin Truex Jr hot on his tail, the competition is far from over. Patience and persistence will be the game’s name as these daring drivers prepare to resume their chase for victory.
During a compelling episode of the ‘Actions Detrimental podcast, Hamlin and co-host Jared Allen delved into the intricacies of Reddick’s triumph. Jared pointed out, “Looking up at this scoring Monitor, Tyler Reddick is at the top of the board. You kind of mentioned how he regained or didn’t regain but gained the lead of the restart.”
“Yeah, they did the different strategy, they stayed out before that rain where us and others pitted, but then he took the lead on the restart from the bottom lane. And what I’ve noticed actually is that this is a top. His historically been a top lane dominant track. But man, he’s, you know, not just him. Others have made the bottom work pretty good on these restarts,” Hamlin grudgingly agreed.
While praising Reddick, Hamlin couldn’t help but contemplate his own approach to future races. He acknowledged the need to adjust his tactics and admitted, “I need to start to hedge lower on some of these restarts because I feel like what my car needs, I’m not giving it quite yet.” This candid reflection showcased the competitive spirit that constantly drives Hamlin to improve his performance.

During the rain delay, the top 10 boasted a star-studded lineup. Alex Bowman, eager to secure a playoff spot, found himself hot on 23XI driver’s tail in second place. The ever-dominant Kyle Larson held his own in third, followed closely by Martin Truex Jr, the current Cup Series points leader. Michigan native Erik Jones rounded off the top five, giving the fans a hometown hero to root for. Also, the stakes couldn’t be higher for Christopher Bell, who kicked off the race in pole position — his second pole in just four races.
The race wasn’t without its share of misfortune. Four drivers bowed out early due to crashes, including Kyle Busch, Chase Elliott, William Byron, and Josh Berry. Berry, filling in for the suspended Noah Gragson, battled bravely in the #42 Legacy Motor Club Chevrolet, but fate dealt a cruel hand.
