As the NASCAR nation is on its final turns, heading into the highly awaited Chicago Street race. Away from the bustling city lanes of Chicago which is about to host NASCAR’s first-ever street race in its 75 years of racing, the racing community witnessed a horrific crash at Mid-Ohio during the practice session of Indycar’s Honda Indy200 on Saturday.

The 2014 Indycar champion and Meyer Shank Racing driver, Simon Pagenaud was thrown off the track into the gravel pit following a critical mechanical failure resulting in a horrific crash that had the driver and his Honda fly through the air, flipping around a total of 9 times till it landed on its side!

Though, the driver miraculously emerged out of the car unhurt, the incident once again points fingers to the dangers of such high octane, on the edge motorsports as even the slightest of miscalculations or the faintest failures can be fatal.

While NASCAR nation is gearing up for Chicago, Honda Indy 200 at Mid-Ohio takes a sharp turn off the tracks!

Now, the hardcore racing fanatics can certify, that racing is definitely not for the faint-hearted. Speeding around lap after lap, strapped in a 700 horsepower turbo-boosted rocket ship that can accelerate up to 60 miles an hour in under 3 seconds with fierce competitors breathing down your neck is bound to have consequences.

While consequence is more of a softer word for it, the racing community just witnessed the horrors of what follows when one of these top-notch machines loses control and goes off track. Meyer Shank Racing driver and proud Honda partner, Simon Pagenaud lives to tell the tale as his Honda coming into the turn encountered a catastrophic brake failure causing the car to lose control and go off track into the gravel.

And as we know, gravel and racecars don’t go well together. The French driver was hurled up into the air with his car flying through the air, barrel rolling and turning around 9 times before it landed on its side next to the tires. Though the French driver took a couple of minutes to shake off the near-death experience as he got out of the car and sat there for a couple of minutes, Indycar’s exceptional safety measures and their constant strive for improvement certainly did it wonders as the driver was left unhurt after such a vicious crash.

While in NASCAR, numerous drivers have had their careers put to an abrupt end owing to such deadly crashes, the very recent incident at Mid-Ohio involving Simon Pagenaud took the community to 1999 when Canadian racer, Greg Moore lost his life on track after a vicious high-speed crash at Fontana.

Though the separate incidents have quite a few similarities, the modern race sophistication and improved dynamics certainly have saved a life, unlike the 1999 crash. Reacting to the wreck, fans quickly dropped down to the comment section as they wrote down their thoughts.

One fan wrote, “Brake failure like this shouldn’t happen. Guess that is a result of old cars not made by the teams themselves”

Holy smokes that is a wild ride.”

While another user praised the engineers behind the modern machine, saving the driver’s life,
