The drama about Chase Elliott and his recent injury continues to unfold. The injury has attracted both criticism and support his way, but the headache for Hendrick Motorsports remains the same. A lot has been predicted about Elliott’s replacement for the time he is away from the tracks, with even Dale Earnhardt Jr. having his say on the matter.

Junior has been quite vocal with his opinions post his retirement from Cup Series. He certainly had some interesting ideas when it came to replacing Chase Elliott. Surprisingly though, the Hendrick Motorsports owner doesn’t seem to fancy Junior’s ideas.

Berry will run at oval tracks while Taylor will drive at the Circuit of The Americas and road courses. While Rick went with this selection, Dale Jr. had a different idea prior to the announcement.

Speaking on The Dale Jr. Download podcast last week, Junior said, “We hadn’t seen an announcement on what’s going to happen with the #9 car as of this recording but for me you know I am hoping Josh [Berry] is in. I have heard a lot of other great ideas about what they would do moving forward.”

He explained how some spice could be added to the selection. The two-time Daytona 500 winner said, “I think there is an opportunity at COTA to try to maybe put a road course ringer, maybe do something completely outside of the box. If I was a Cup owner, I would look into obviously the Indycar series and even F1, right?”

“And who’s available? What big name could I bring in here and make a big splash and create a lot of conversation? Regardless of the result on the racetrack what could I do to really get in a ton of exposure? So COTA’s a chance.” That didn’t work out as Junior wanted it to, but he shared some insight into what Elliott would be feeling right now.

He further added, “There’s half of you that wants it to not go well, there’s half of you that wants it to go well. It’s a really, really weird feeling. I’m just gonna be clear, man. When you are not in the car, you are terribly conflicted and you are probably not your best self in terms of how you want things to happen.”
