The Next Gen car in NASCAR has opened up many gates on new and interesting avenues for the sport. In many ways, the new car has been a success. But in many ways on the flip side, it hasn’t been. Or at least, it hasn’t solved the problem it was meant to. And part of those things was what Joey Logano recently pointed out.
The part that’s called ‘dirty air.’ The part that is ever-present in all forms of motorsports, be it Formula 1, NASCAR, or INDYCAR.

This is precisely the point Logano made.
“You are never going to get rid of dirty air in racing, period. You look at any form of motorsports, it’s there, you can look at Sprint Car racing, you can look at INDYCAR, you can look at F1, NASCAR, you name it,” he said.
This is from Gateway but I think my question to Logano applies to Sonoma too.
Anytime the Next Gen races on a one groove track, including a road course, it's really going to take a lot to get past this wake.

Joey Logano elaborates on what’s different about dirty air in NASCAR this year
The Team Penske driver described how this year, the wake is a lot different from the previous years simply because the cars are more symmetrical. Logano explained how the wake used to go to the right, which made it difficult for the cars behind to pass from the right side.

But now, since the cars are symmetrical, the wake now goes out directly from beneath the car.
“It’s more concentrated behind a car, so if you are directly behind the car, it is more intense than it’s ever been, but it’s better on either side of the car, left or right,” Logano continued.

As for what can be done to fix it, Joey Logano believes it’s the equivalent of “punching a hole in the air.” The #22 driver believes some adjustments like making smaller spoilers can make it better as they’ve proved effective in the past.

But even a smaller spoiler won’t really be the fix since the existing spoilers on the Next Gen car are pretty small.
“I don’t know how you adjust to fix it at this point,” Logano added.
