During the Stage 3 restart at Richmond recently, Ross Chastain once again crashed into another car, spinning out Kyle Busch. However, right behind them was the #42 that narrowly escaped the wreck, simply because it had Lewis Hamilton in it.

Before we all lose our minds, it’s a joke that Freddie Kraft, the spotter of Bubba Wallace, recently made.

As the spotters were discussing the Chastain-Busch incident, Brett Griffin questioned, “Who was in Ty Dillon’s car yesterday?”

This is assumingly because Dillon, very cleverly, survived the traffic.

Anyway, to that question, Kraft answered, “Lewis Hamilton I think.”

“Damn,” Griffin reacted. “Where’d he come from?”

Lewis Hamilton had expressed his desire to race in NASCAR years ago

In an interview from 2015, Lewis Hamilton had spoken candidly about the interest he has in NASCAR. The Mercedes driver, at that point, had just attended the season finale in Miami when he described his thoughts on stock car racing.

“The race was 267 laps – really long – but I thoroughly enjoyed it, trying to understand the strategy and the differences between the cars. It was neat. It made me want to drive one – I really fancy a race in a NASCAR one day,” he said.

“I’m not sure I’d do an oval, but possibly a street circuit or road course.”

Hamilton theorized that NASCAR is “a very different world” from F1, which is to say that the teams are smaller, so much so that the future seven-time world champion was reminded of his F3 days.

“The fans can get really close in the paddock and even be right next to the pit stops. And, in terms of the technology the teams have, it is kept much simpler compared to F1,” he added.
